Loud whining

I have a 96 gmc Sierra ext cab 4.3 5 speed 2wd that has a very loud whining coming from the trans when driving Especially in 4th and 5th going over 40mph. But if you let off the gas or press in the clutch the noise goes completely away any ideas?

Are you sure it's from the transmission, and not the rear differential? Either way, I'd be checking the oil levels of both first.
