Camera's, why only 8 seconds on?

Like the new cameras my 2019 slt came with, however why do they only stay on for 8 seconds. Why not have them stay on as lon as I want. 

 

Always wondered why I can't just leave my rear view camera on in older trucks. 

 

 

Is here here a reason?

Safety I imagine. Same reason you aren't supposed to have a DVD player in the dash. Distraction from the road.

I suppose,however no different than starring in the rear view mirror, it's just now a camera

The are more worried about putting gadgets and gizmos than making sure that the experience of using said gadgets and gizmos deliver a great USEFUL experience.... In my line of work (IT software development), you have engineers, then User Experience designers that make sure it meets the experience expected.
