moo snutz Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 Hey All - I just turned 750 miles on the truck & I noticed a few days ago a faint clicking sound under throttle. Is this pinging? I noticed it a lot more after I dropped a K&N filter in - which by the way I'm less than impressed with, but that's a whole different story. Did I do something to the MAF sensor? OY! D**N PING Thanks
tmf6902 Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 It's really hard to describe...it really just sounds like a knocking...thus the knocking or pinging.....I dunno I have always thought of it sounding like someone put marbles in my engine and they're rolling around in there. But that's what it sounds like to me. But if you get the sound you describe under throttle, chances are that is the knock or ping sound. I dunno it's one of those things....it's really hard to describe....you may be able to find a sound clip on the internet to hear an example. TMF ps....I know I know...marbles....but I swear for some reason it reminds me of marbles???
ril850 Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 I'm kinda curious about this subject as I myself have wondered what this pinging sound is, everyone is always talking about it. Does anyone else have 2 cents on the subject?
HendyPhoto Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 Pinging sounds like a Ford or Dodge Diesel at idle.
Wingnut Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 ps....I know I know...marbles....but I swear for some reason it reminds me of marbles??? At least you know where they are....You haven't lost them. And yeah....It kinda sounds like an idling diesel when you are at WOT.
CMNTMXR81 Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 Firstly, it sounds like a metallic pinging. Dieseling is another term for it, because it sounds like a diesel. Only I would say it's not as hearty as a diesel. Question is, how bad is it? Does it happen at throttle tip in and is barely a faint audible ping? If so, that is normal with these engines until the tables for fuel, spark, and even the EGR system catch up to the velocity and amount of incoming air. Like I said, if it's just momentary and barely audible, that is normal. Especially in hotter climates this is common. Now if you put the pedal down and it sounds like a Cummins turbo diesel, then that's a whole different story.
robsawatsky Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 Pinging = marbles bouncing around under your hood, but not too many, usually not harmfull in the short term. Knocking = BAD, BAD, BAD, yeh it really sounds like somethings trying to get out of your engine compartment. Heavy knocking can do damage real quick.
brady69 Posted October 14, 2003 Posted October 14, 2003 yes ...I too have a duramax with this pinging or tapping sound. I especially notice this at idle standing outside next to the vehicle (2001 duramax). I have brought it to my dealers attention and he says many duramaxes have this and the manuf. doesnt even know what it is, I dont believe this but I had him log this down in my record before the warranty ran out because he said if something does develop I made it known under warranty. I did have a diesel injection co. tell me it was the high pressure fuel system popping because of this high pressure??
