Looking for new tires and wheels, any suggestions?

I've had my 2018 now for a bit over a year with about 13,000 miles and I am thinking of finally changing out my tires and wheels. Good thing is that with such low mileage, I was looking around and my tries can still fetch a few bucks and of course I'd be selling the current wheels. I currently have the Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude HT's, and these past few months I haven't felt like they have been that good in the rain and with winter on the way, plus I want to have a bit more aggressive looking tires/wheels.

 

My current tires are a 265/65R18, would I be able to get a set of 20's on here without any kind of rubbing occurring? I'll probably get a 2 inch lift/level done on this truck at some point next year, just want to make sure if I went with 20's that I won't have any issues. Plus I plan to also get Katzkins installed later this Fall.

 

The truck is a graphite color (added a pic of the truck), and I was considering getting the Nitto Ridge Grapplers and the Moto Metal Black MO970 wheels.

My first recommendation is stay away from 20" wheels if you appreciate a nice ride. I really liked the design of my snowflake 20" wheels on my SLT but when I initially changed from the stock P255/55R20 to P275/60R20 the ride was still pretty good with Bilstein 2" level. Then I put on a set of LT285/60R20 and the ride went to hell.

 

Even after installing Boss Halo Coilovers the ride was much improved but it was like the truck ricochet off of bumps.

 

This weekend I put a set of Vision Nemisis 111 18x9 with 0 offset and Nitto Terra Grappler G2 295/70R18 Tire’s and the ride almost feels like a stock truck!

Thanks for the recommendation on the 20" wheels. What size can I get on here without any rubbing occurring since I don't have any kind of lift at the moment and would I need to have my speedo re-calibrated if I went with a slightly larger tire?

 

I'll be looking for a smooth ride for sure, my wife drives the truck too and she will complain if this thing is all bumpy as hell on the road. LOL!

 

Are the Nitto Grapplers good or should I be looking at the G2's?

You are going to want to stay under the 33in tires and if you have mud flaps you must take that into account too. If you go with a larger tire you will get closer to the mudflap and it may rub on tight turns. Also remember the wheel offset, if it is a lot different than stock and pokes out more it will change where the tire could rub as well.

 

The weight difference between a 265/65/18 Ridge grappler to terra grappler is only 3 pounds, so that would be a non issue in stock size. The Ridge Grappler has much larger lugs/blocks to the tread pattern so that may make them louder and slightly more rough riding than say the Terra Grapple tread design.

 

A 275/65/18 tire is about .5 inches wider and .5 inches taller than the stock size. That would be a safe option because you know you wouldn't have any rubbing concerns.

 

Going larger can put you into LT tire territory. Prices are likely to jump a lot and the tires become much heavier ( like 15lbs more per tire) and the ride would be worse on a half ton.

I went with my local Discount Tire and they matched Discount Tire Direct prices.  I went with https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-wheels/vision-nemesis for $173 EA and https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/nitto-terra-grappler-g2 for $287 EA.  The tires are non LT and.  Between the Wheels and Tires I shaved 15Lbs per corner and you can feel it.  As far as the wheels, I wanted something I haven't seen on my color truck yet, and when they got mounted, i really liked them.

Advice: leveling doesn’t ensure you’ll have the right fit without rubbing, be careful that you buy the right offset wheel so you don’t rub.

In addition, as mentioned above, 20’s look good but do ride rougher than 18” and especially with LT tires. I hated my ride quality when I was leveled at 2.25”, leveled truck WILL ride rough, avoid leveling blocks, Bilstein leveling 5100’s up front are somewhat better but you’ll definitely feel harsh ride with LT tires.

Also, so you don’t go from one set of new wheels to another, make sure you’re not going to prefer lifting your truck as I went from leveled to lifted and three sets of new wheels too along with going from 33” to 34” all within a year.

Get a tuner like SuperChips so you can reset you Speedo which you’ll need one after getting larger tires, Good luck!

I'm looking for a bit more aggressive tire, but something that will also be good for all year round including the snow and rain. Do you guys recommend the Falken Wildpeak AT3W or Nitto Terra Grappler G2 as I'm also looking for a smooth ride.

The wildpeaks have had some good reviews and some have said that they’re not so good after the first winter, who knows. Nothing is as good as a true dedicated snow/winter tire but KO2’s have great solid reviews. Long term is a factor, you get what you pay for. As for Wheels, I’d recommend discussing that question with the reputable wheel and tire store you’re most comfortable with, they’d better explain your best options. I prefer “Fuel” Off-Road wheels, mostly cause they’re extremely easy to maintain and cost for replacement won’t really hurt as much. They’re probably all built in China lol

Going from a 265/65 to a 275/65 is only that half inch difference, that will not require a tune to change anything. We are talking like 1mph difference give or take at freeway speeds.

 

It won't be anything like 3-5mph where it can skew shift points and change the speedo a lot.

Good to know about the Wildpeaks. Agreed on the dedicated snow tires, would be nice if I had the option to just swap them out for the seasons.

 

I was looking at Fuel, Moto, Vision and a few other wheels. I just have to figure out which one to go with. I'd probably order at my local Discount Tire since they are also pretty good with the certificates too.

 

Did you guys also get the same tire and rim for the spare or keep your spare the same? I have to figure if I stay with 265/65 that I keep the current spare or if I go 275/65 then I'll need to get another spare/wheel.

 

Hell, a few weeks ago I was even tinkering of trading this 2018 in next year for a 2020 Trail Boss, but having come from a 2016 Colorado that had some issues to a 2018 Silverado that has been running pretty good so far is hard to give up. Plus its cheaper to do most of these mods then losing money trading in on a bit over year old truck.

Discount Tire is a great place to purchase your wheels and tires from. You can always keep your wheels and add dedicated winter tires to them so you can swap them out as you’d like. Best thing about Discount Tire (aside of their excellent customer service) is that they’ll test fit your your wheels and tires before you roll out [emoji1303]

I never knew that they would test fit at Discount Tire, that is very helpful. I heard they also give you 30 days if unsatisfied. I've only ever bought tires from them in the past.

 

Are there any good sites that allow you to visually place tires and wheels on to see what they look like? I've toyed around with a few, but they haven't been that great.

Thanks @dcarl @TXGREEK @CamGTP for the help guys. On Saturday I went to Discount Tire, and ordered the Nitto Terra Grappler G2's at 275/65/18 and the Vision Nemesis 111 wheels in matte black. I do have the factory mudflaps, but the manager at DT didn't think we needed to do any trimming and sounded from what you guys said I should be good.

 

Once I get this done, I'll have to start looking at Katzkins and any recommendations on an exhaust?

 

I'm not looking for anything super loud, probably mid range with a dual rear exit which is what I'm thinking at the moment. Do you guys think if I were to buy an exhaust from RealTruck, would a reputable muffler shop install what I purchased? I can do it myself, but don't have that kind of time anymore to fiddle with.
