I have a 4l80e converter I've been fighting with. Wont go any deeper than picture shows. Pump spins and so does first set of gears in converter but back set (touching screwdriver) do not. Any suggestions?2eb4da5542c610334947420da2f5e22a.jpg7c77bdab633e3658d860b30f0f63de63.jpg

When I had to do it, I remember it took some effort to get it past the seal & bushing up front, and then some fiddling to get it engaged with the oil pump.

And  make sure it's in all the way, otherwise you'll damage the torque converter or the pump. After you get the transmission bolted to the engine, the torque converter shouldn't be pressed against the flexplate.  The TC should be able to spin without touching the flexplate, and you should have to pull it forward a bit to bolt it to the flexplate.  You may wish to make a simple bracket you can bolt onto the transmission to hold the TC in all the way while you install the transmission.

On the 904 and 727 transmission in the mid-size Chrysler products, I used to use a long 3/8 combination wrench bolted to the front of the case using the inspection cover bolt to hold the converter in while installing.  Those cars put the transmission mount on top of the torsion bar cross-member that was welded in.  Pain in the ass to do.

I used to use an old chassis lube barrel that I would drop the built transmission into tail first, then drop the converter in.  Only had the 3 'clunks' on those transmissions.

What are you attempting to accomplish? Are you swapping trans or replacing just the TC?. The one set of splines in the the TC is for the stator and will only spin one way and will lock in other direction.
