Hello,

I had the check engine light on my 2018 Siverado 5.3 with 36K on it, came on, great local shop said it was P06DD.

Reset the error after testing pressures and checking for leaks etc. From this forum, and online chat, it seems this will be a problem again. Love my truck, but don't want those headaches. My 2006 Duramax never had a problem at all.

Time to rethink this brand of gas truck. Oh heck.

My 2014 Silverado which I purchase new, has been throwing the P066DD code intermittently for  3 years now.  I have no performance problems that I can tell.  My engine is the V6.  With the Check Eng. Light on the engine will not drop into the V4 mode.  After 50-100 miles of driving it will again start to drop into the V4 mode and shortly after that the code will clear itself.  This will only last for a few days at which time the entire cycle repeats itself. It's almost like clockwork.  I do regular oil/filter changes and my oil pressure is consistently between 45-55 psi.  My problem is that in the state of NJ and Check engine light will fail you for inspection so I have to time it right..  LOL

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I am dealing with this code P06DD, I would clear the code and when it switched to V4 mode it would immediately switch back to V6 mode and then give me a pending P06DD.  I noticed my temp would never go past 180, my thermostat was stuck. Replaced it now it goes to 210 and the code disappeared.. for a little while. Now it comes back on at random every now and then.  Seems like when I am accelerating hard.  I am curious about what you said about your oil pressure though.  You said yours stays between 45-55.  Before I replaced the thermostat my oil pressure never went below 45, after I replaced it when the engine gets hot and I stop it will go on back to 20-30 range , and when I accelerate hard it will climb up to 60 sometimes past that.  I was told that was the correct range of the oil pressure with this engine. You might have a thermostat that is starting to fail, what is your temperature like ?

My engine temp usually runs in the area of 205.   I've been dealing with this for like I said 3 years.  I don't clear the code because the code clears itself after a few days..  The agency I purchased the truck from wanted to replace the oil pump at a cost of $2300 and that was 3 years ago citing I could be damaging   my engine.  Oil pressure seems to be running high all the time but as long as I have pressure, and I watch it like a hawk,  I'm not spending the money which is now in the $2600 range I'm hearing.  Maybe I'll look into the thermostat at some point but I've always been a believer if it's not broke, don't fix it.

I understand what you mean.  I talked to an engineer that used to work for Toyota, he says that the ECU is in another mode until the engine gets "hot." Once it gets to this point then it starts changing things.  He said that GM wants the engine to get to its "hot" temperature as quickly as possible because that's where it's most efficient. He claims that the ECU will do everything it can to get the engine to that temperature including putting the 2 stage oil pump in high mode to increase oil pressure to warm it up more quickly.  If you are running 205 and under your failing thermostat could be causing your computer to "flirt with being in warm mode" if that makes sense.  That would explain why it is intermittent.  Everyone I have talked to with a 4.3 and 5.3 said the temperature goes to 210 and then stays there and doesn't move... If it is at 205 and fluctuating at all I would say your thermostat is starting to fail.  It's a very cheap part and very easy to replace, might be worth it. My oil pressure was high all the time before I replaced my stuck thermostat. It really never went under 50. As soon as I replaced it when it got hot, she dropped on back to just above 20 at idle. My code was coming back on every now and then but I figured out my oil was about 1.5 quarts low because I was always checking it on an incline.  Filled it up to where it is supposed to be and haven't seen the check engine light since, I also put an AC Delco filter on at the same time, and a new oil drain plug(because the o ring was flattened where someone had over-tightened it and had slow leak), and filled the coolant reservoir back up where I lost antifreeze when I replaced the thermostat.  I have heard people that had the P06DD and needed the oil pump replaced, however theirs was actually "stuck off" and their oil pressure was @ 70 all the time.  Also another thing is the oil pressure sensor filter screen. I don't know if you have tried replacing the oil pressure sensor yet, but there is a plug about 3-4 inches back from it you take the plug out and there is a screen filter down it (you have to pull out with needle nose pliers) if it is dirty the oil pressure sensor can be getting the wrong readings and cause this code.  I honestly think your problem is not the pump, its something stupid like my problem was lol.  Also, do you have dexos 1 approved oil in it? Make sure it isn't the "high mileage" oil because it has extra additives that make it thicker, and a thicker oil can trigger P06DD by being the wrong viscosity.  For example a 5w-30 high mileage oil is really similar to a 0w-40 is what I read somewhere.  If you ask me these vehicles are getting way to sensitive, just like a woman, everything has to be just right. haha

My 2014 started doing this every time it gets close to oil change time. It’s been doing this now for 3 years. Have Taken it to the dealer twice first time they said the code went off and doesn’t show an issue now. 2nd time they said looks like it does this when I get close to an oil change. Just popped on again tonight. Guess what time it is? Took it by a parts store sure enough. The crazy thing is the light will come on and off before I get it in for an oil change.

That is a great answer! Thanks for taking the time to discuss P06DD. MY 2014 Silverado is showing it intermittently when oil pressure rises on engine warm up to almost 60 psi. I also have temp not nailed on 210 but flirting with it. If I stop with engine hot, turn it off then restart the oil pressure sits where it should at 45.  I will replace thermostat and oil pressure sensor and get back to you. Thanks again!!

Your welcome, hope that it helped you out.  I noticed my truck stopped going into V4 mode at random after 2000 miles and I changed the oil and it operated normally again. I noticed however that the oil was a lot dirtier than it should be after 2000 miles.  Before I changed the oil I checked the code reader and had a pending "P06DD" So it made sense if the oil is dirty then the viscosity of the oil has changed is why its triggering the code.   After researching the things that would make your oil dirty quicker, I stumbled on the topic of the PCV valve.  I read in another post that the PCV valve was the most common thing to go out on these trucks, and the most common sign of it going bad is oil getting dirty quicker.  So I replaced it (another cheap quick repair) and changed the oil again and I could instantly tell that the truck ran better. If my PCV valve was actually bad then it couldn't have been "breathing" correctly, and I expect to see some sludge in my next oil change where the Mobil 1 will clean it. Probably will get dirty quick again, but hopefully for the last time.  I am also going to replace the oil pressure sensor screen filter again, some people have told me to throw it out and not replace it, however others have said that this is to protect the AFM system so I will just replace it. One thing about all this still puzzles me however. The 5.3 and 4.3 are virtually the same engine except the 4.3 is short 2 cyl, most of the parts are the same thing.  So why does the 4.3 use 5w-30 and the 5.3 use 0-w20? Could it be that the computer is looking for 0W-20 just like the 5.3 and that would explain why the 4.3 is so sensitive to dirty oil? It says in the book that the 4.3 can also use 0w-30, and I know that's only thinner at startup but I wonder would it make any difference? Just like "Im Lon 2" says it comes back near oil changes, I wonder if he had thinner oil if it would come back ? I am hesitant to change thickness of oil much because of the AFM uses the oil as "hydraulic fluid." So I don't know maybe try 0-w30 when I change the oil again. May be the wrong way though, it may need thicker oil, or it may not make any difference just a thought.

Just curious what oil and filter are you using when you do an oil change?

I have a 2014 Silverado  with 162,000 miles.  And it just started  to pop up a code PO6DD engine oil pressure control performance circuit stuck off  and the oil pressure  is running  at 70. And it stays  on v8 and does not change to v4. Once I  clear the code  it drops back down to  40 pounds.  And everything is  fine.  I was told  to oil pump  need to be replaced, I  heard  cylinders 7 and 8 might be stopped up. Can anyone  help  me with this?

Having this issue did you get it fixed? What was it?

last week i also noticed that my fan was randomly staying on after i cut my truck off. Even after cold starts and stops and the temperature gauge wasn’t going up, This is obviously something to do with the thermostat, anyone change the thermostat and have the code go away?

Sorry for late reply. I have not changed my thermostat yet. The P06DD code has gone away on its own. The code was being set due to oil pressure after start remaining higher than usual. Sometimes the pressure would return to normal (no code set after I cleared it) and would not return. Sometimes I had to stop and turn engine off then restart and pressure would return to normal with no code set. I’m guessing something got unstuck. Good luck and keep us posted!

Bump.

I started using a Range and the code cleared itself right up, now I am sending the range back for an update. Unplugged the range 3 days later same code comes back PO6DD. I am gonna caulk it up to my truck hates going into V-4, anyone else ever experience anything like this?

I had range in my 14 5.3 and was fine. No issues. After 3 years took it out and bam. P06dd popped up. Oil pressure up to almost 70 and felt power loss

    • Here's a starter kit:    CC Jensen, a Danish oil testing Concern gives us the following guidelines:   ISO 14/12/10 Very Clean Oil ISO 16/14/11 Clean Oil ISO 17/15/12 Lightly Contaminated ISO 19/17/14 New Oil ISO 22/20/17 Very Contaminated and not suitable for any service.   In addition CC Jensen gives a table showing how engine life is increased by cleaning up the oil. For example cleaning the oil from 19/17/14 to 13/11/8 will extend motor life by a factor of 6X.   But even cleaning it two “Life Extension Classes” will double motor life. So perhaps giving those classes would be useful:   21/19/16 20/18/15 19/17/14 18/16/13 17/15/12 16/14/11 15/13/10 14/12/9 13/11/8   *************************************   https://testoil.com/program-management/setting-iso-cleanliness-targets/   Third paragraph from the bottom will give a starting point.    Your next question should be, okay 10um at what Beta ratio and the answer is in the graph Beta 75.   Then the next question is what is your chosen filters profile? (Purolator PL series below) The red dot is Beta 75. This was the information I obtained from MANN a few years ago. So the best filters, Purolator One, AMSOIL EA, FRAM Ultra, Royal Purple, Bosch Premium should get a doubling engine life over filters like Purolator L, any service filter from any quick lube, WIX, NAPA, STP, Mobil 1, Purolator BOSS.    And as noted by CC Jensen a 2-5 micron @ Beta 200 bypass system has the capability of a six fold improvement. AMSOIL has such a system as does Donaldson.       Now having said all that testing is the touchstone. Test the oil NEW and test it with your chosen filter. Then test over milage. Do the work, get the result. But understand this in NOT absolute BECAUSE this is one factor in isolation.   Example:    A valve spring supplier can state that with cam X and a valve train of Y grams the valves will not float to 7K rpm. is that true if the builder choose a system 20 grams over limit? Common sense must be used and limits understood.
    • This doesn't look like a GM truck. Not needed on a HD truck
    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.
    • So after reading the reveal from Chevrolet, I kept asking myself...why did the trim levels change?   Here are the official ones:   Work Truck (WT): The quintessential fleet truck, built with durable, easy-to-clean interiors for commercial or utilitarian use. Custom: A stylish, road-oriented trim that adds a more refined appearance, standard dual exhaust, and modern exterior styling. Custom Trail Boss: An entry-level off-roader featuring a 2-inch factory suspension lift and 34-inch mud-terrain tires on a budget. Silverado: Serving as the new base consumer truck (replacing the previous LT trim), it comes standard with the Z71 off-road package when equipped with 4WD. Trail Boss: Steps up the off-road hardware with the 2-inch lift, 34-inch tires, monotube shocks, an exclusive off-road hood, and more premium interior options. ZR2: The flagship off-roader. It boasts 35-inch mud-terrain tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear electronic lockers, forged carbon-fiber interior accents, and an available hardcore Bison Edition (co-developed with AEV). High Country: The pinnacle of luxury. It replaces bright chrome with modern satin chrome, 22-inch wheels, premium leather, real wood interior trim, a panoramic sunroof, and an exclusive front-passenger touchscreen. As others have stated, why would you want a Silverado - 'Silverado' - wth?? LT needs to remain!!!   Also, there will no longer be a dedicated Z71 model.  All 4x4 trucks will have the Z71 package. Carplay is also something that cannot be removed.  Hopefully it will remain.     I am excited about the 5.7L V8 (350 C.I.D.)  Old school Chevy power.  My only concern is whatever version of AFM/DFM cylinder deactivation.  Too bad that isn't an option a buyer can choose to have or not.   I will definitely be stopping by my local dealership when these trucks start showing up.
