My son owns a 93 Toyota Pickup with a 5 speed trans, four cyl. engine. and the clutch is slipping. 150,000 miles on the original clutch. Anybody got a quick estimate on the cost to replace the clutch. If you are in the Huntington Beach , Ca. area can you recommend a good shop to do the work.

Thanks

I had an 89 Toyota, and my total cost for clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bushing was under $150. But I did the work myself. Not too difficult. By myself, I did it in one (very loooong) day.

And the only shop in Cali that I could recommend is in El Cajon :smash:

Good luck with it

Thanks wingnut.

My son doesn't have access to a lift of other means of getting the truck up on jacks. So I think he has to take it to a shop. Would the labor be about the same as the parts?

Ammco Trans are they reputable?

I didn't need a lift, and it was a 2wd. But a jack and stands would be necessary. If it's 4wd.....he may not need those. The tranny isn't that heavy. He!!, I put mine back in without a jack. Just "benched" it up in there. Of course, I was only around 20 at the time.....And in great shape

I would say labor would run you quite a bit.

When I lived in San Diego, I had to pay to get my tranny dropped (In the 92) and it was about five bills, just to drop it, no parts, no fixing, just in labor. But a clutch is an in-and-out job....I don't know. Ammco....Did you call them? For something like a (relatively) quick clutch job on a Yota, I would imagine they would give you a pretty accurate quote over the phone.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

My 93 Toyota did the same thing at about the same time, 130K miles. Mine was a V6, don't know if it was any more expensive, but at the dealer, it was going to be about $750. I found a shop to do it for $100, plus parts, got it done for under $300. Chris

I called Ammco and they would only give me a quote if I brought the truck in for them to do their "free " inspection. I asked them if the free inspection included dropping the tranny to inspect the clutch but they wouldnt say anything unless I brought the truck in. I got quotes over the phone ranging from $500 to $600. total.

Sounds about right. Sucks....But that sounds (to me) to be in the right range.

You might find some smaller local shops for a little cheaper, clutches are pretty cut and dried (no tranny internals involved), so I wouldn't worry too much about how good their work is....Quality of materials on the clutch itself however, is another matter. :sigh:
