Hello, I have a 1995 GMC Sierra K1500 5.7 liter.

 

The problem I am having with my truck is only observed when it is warm, when the temp reaches ~170F, it will start cutting out when it reaches 1800 rpm, then as it gets warmer it’ll start doing the same thing at 1500 rpm, and the cycle keeps going until the truck eventually chokes itself out and completely shuts off. When cold it will idle and run COMPLETELY fine, it will not cut out at all and will run like an absolute champ. When warm and idling it’ll also do the same thing as mentioned above, it’ll choke itself out. I have had the truck at 75 mph when cold and there’s not a single problem, though I can’t say the same when it eventually warms up. I did the paper clip method, as I could not find anybody who had an OBD-1 code scanner, and it showed a code 32. I cleaned the EGR valve because it was stuck, and made sure the plunger worked. I also put a lower degree thermostat. Also I should mention, I have cleaned the idle air control valve and have tested the TPS, which when testing, checked out good. I rechecked the fuel pressure and it’s within tolerance. Prior to this work I’ve done to the truck, I purchased it non-running with a bad transmission pump, replaced the pump, transmission works perfect. 

This is what I’ve done so far:

-New 195 degree thermostat

-New fuel pump

-New fuel filter

-New Distributer Cap 

-New Rotor Button

-New Spark plugs and wires

-New ignition control module (Noted: When I replaced the ignition control module, it ran flawlessly at any temperature for about 100 miles, then the truck sat for about 4 days, when crunk up and drove again, as it got warmer it started cutting out again as it did before)

- Replaced both temperature ascending units

 

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I had forgot to include that I’ve changed the coil. You’re not the first person to tell me to swap the module, yesterday my father was saying the same thing. I haven’t ever been sold a defective part before, but it is all a possibility, I will keep the forum updated. Thank you!

Only cause you mentioned,100 miles, just fine,but,if the symptoms were the same with the first one,it's good, you could try unplugging the map sensor electric connection and test drive,just to see if it was going flaky and leaning it out

Just swapped the ignition module and it’s doing the same thing. Never encountered a problem like this... I officially have no clue what it could be. Replaced the coil on it again as well. No help there.

Hmm, sounded like heat/electric breakdown,so,same with egr, is that not able to close with underhood heat, binding?

Well. I’ve been doing research for the past couple of days and I just cannot find another individual who’s encountered the exact same problem as I am. Ever since I cleaned the EGR, the service engine light hasn’t came on. Tried reading any codes, all it’s showing is, 12, and that’s code for normal. My neighbor said it could be something to do with the computer itself, though he didn’t go into much detail, so I don’t know about the credibility of that. If I am able to, I will post videos soon of what the truck is exactly doing. It boggles me.

That's why your on a forum,stuff doesn't break the same way Everytime,so,I mentioned earlier, unplug the map,try it, make it go into open loop, better? look for cracked vacuum line to it,other is,if you are lean, unplug cts,rich is default in pcm,it helps to narrow it down

That truck has the oil pressure sensor right behind distributor, correct?that's the only item I can think of,that you touched the connection during distributor work,it is tied to fuel pump operation,they do fail,short to ground internally,or partial in your situation

Dude you are an absolute lifesaver!!!! Something so so so so so so so simple, but I would have NEVER thought to check it. If you would’ve never brought it to my attention, I would’ve never thought of it for the months to come. Thank you man, you’ve earned my respect and the best answer!!

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
