A while ago I got the service 4 wheel drive message. So far I have replaced the front diff motor and the transfer case control module, but no success. Could this be a problem with the transfer case motor instead? Is there such a thing as a sensor to monitor fluid levels that could be making the message come up? Thank you

I cant tell you if the fluid levels will make this message come up, but I do know a few things that can trigger this message. 1) the electronic switch if you have that option, 2) the ground connection located just behind the front drivers fender, and 3) the actuator.

Noticed you have an 09 like me. Have you tried this reset procedure?  ------>  https://ricksfreeautorepairadvice.com/service-4-wheel-drive-message/      Mine popped up a while back and this fixed it quick and easy no parts required. Kinda hope it isn't your problem because it sounds like you have put a lot of money into it.

I'll give this a shot right now. I haven't been spending a ton of money, been buying used parts off of wrecked trucks. Hopefully this works...

What Year/Make/Model is it?

What are the codes?

Get me a little more information and I can help you.

2011 gmc Sierra 1500 6.2l

I have been trying to figure out what is going on with this "service 4wd" message.

Started after a 4 hour highway drive.  Got to where I was going and parked it which is when I got the first message.  When I went to start my truck 2 days later my selector knob says it was in 4wd low but I left it in 2wd when I parked.  I tried shifting from park to reverse and drive but neither would move the truck.  I pulled the fuse while in neutral with the engine running and stuck it back in and it shifted to 2wd. Left it like that until I drove 4 hours back home.  Now that I've been home I've replaced transfer case control module (encoder motor) and 4wd actuator.  Tried cleaning the ground wire under drivers door. Tried the process for relearning the clutch (turn off for 30 seconds,  turn key to accessory then shift to neutral,  twist selector knob past 4wd low for 30+seconds). Nothing has worked yet.  Trying to unhook ground from the battery for a half hour right now.

Don't know if this has anything to do with this problem but I had power steering issues which dumped power steering fluid everywhere while running and the moving parts slung that ps fluid everywhere.  Did I fry something?

it is a 2009 Silverado LT, I have put my scan tool on it and it didn't show any codes. I'm going to try my dad's scan tool since he thinks it may also bring up some transmission codes. I ordered a used transfer case motor and should arrive soon. I'm going to also install that as well, hopefully that solves it, but i will try to get the codes read too

I wouldn't spend any money in it till I knew what was going on. That's money you could spend in purchasing a decent scanner and finding out what the problem is. Then you have a tool forever that you can use.

Let me know the codes you get so I can help you further. Without them, it's all a guess.

Sage advice. I had the same error for over a year and invested in an Actron scanner that can read GM manufacturer codes. I found the electronic switch that changes from 2wd/auto/4wd was bad and replaced it for less than $30 and a 5 minute repair. The switches are a common failure point. They communicate with the controller by sending voltage signals that correspond to the setting. When the voltage doesn't match the switch setting, you get a Service 4wd message on the dash. The Actron CP9680 will read manufacturer codes and it's $115 on Amazon. Much cheaper than all the parts you've replaced.
