I have a 2002 1500hd 2wd with 6 in lift 35 1250 17 tires truck came stock with 373 gear I want to change gear so it drives like it did factory I was told to run a 456 or 488 rear gear any ideas

Yes, you do want different gears for sure.

 

Go with 4.56's at a minimum. Going to 4.88's isn't a bad option either but I don't know how you plan to use your truck.

 

My opinion is 4.10's with 33's, 4.56's with 34 or 35's and 4.88's with 37's on a 4 speed auto. It would be different on a 6 speed or 8 speed auto. Or if all this thing did was tow heavy trailers under 65mph then 4.88's would be a beast and have far more mechanical advantage around town and getting up to speed.

4.56 would be closest to stock, actually when calculated out, better than stock 3.73.  It would be more like if the truck came with around a 4.10 gear.

 

Make sure when you are gear shopping, 1500HD uses the 9.5" 14 bolt semi float axle and not the 10.5" 14 bolt full float axle.
