lauriet1 Posted July 10, 2002 Posted July 10, 2002 Haven't been out here in a week or so. Hope everyone is well and had a great Fourth of July. We've not been doing well at all and our Fourth of July $ucked. Went camping June 27 for the weekend. Hubby brought the dogs up in my little blue car friday nite about 11 pm, I was already there and set up. My 8 year old Male Dobie, Zeke got out of the car and was limping badly (that's putting it mildly). Actually his left hind leg wasn't functioning at all. After fixing a flat tire (bent rim????) on the car, we took him to the local vet Saturday. An xray showed that his back leg was broken in FIVE pieces (straight across and four pieces of bone split off the vertical break). Come to find out (when the vet probed for a cause), my husband admitted he went off the edge of new pavement on the way into the camping area (explains the flat tire and bent rim, huh?). We took Zeke to a top notch Veterinary Specialty facility on Monday July 1. Had a consultation with the best Board Certified Small Animal Orthopedic Surgeon in New York State which went well. Based on the info we were given by the doctor, we were pretty confident the leg would be repaired (they were going to put in a bone plate, wires, etc. same operation they do on people). On Tuesday we got a call from the doctor during the surgery telling us that the dog had bone cancer which didn't show in the x-ray and that's why his leg broke so easily. He said this was an accident waiting to happen. With amputation, he would have had 4 months to live. We just couldn't go that route and decided not to bring him out of the anesthesia, had to let him go. We miss him so much. You only get one super special dog in your life and he was it for us. As a result, we cancelled our trip to Gettysburg, it was just too depressing to go anywhere. Cancelled my vacation days at work too. On the bright side, we are now looking for a Red / Rust Dobie puppy. There are a couple of really good breeders here, and I think I've located one a couple hours away. Will be visiting there this weekend. We're going to get another one right away because my female is not handling the situation very well. She's pretty upset. I spent my time this past weekend getting anal with the truck. Thought it would help soothe my soul - I clayed and hand waxed - it took a LONG TIME. I used the Mother's Clay Bar Kit and Mother's Carnuba Wax. Even polished the wheels with Mothers Mag Polish. It looks really nice after all that work - kinda made me smile. Sorry for the rambling post...Thanks for reading. Take care everyone. To those of you who have doggies, give them an extra special hug every day...You never know if that one will be their last. Laurie

carguru Posted July 10, 2002 Posted July 10, 2002 Sorry to hear about the dog and your holiday. Our dog just sprained his front paw last week while we were up at my in-laws on Long Island. He is still limping but getting better. Hope you find another great dog.
