I have an 8 speed transmission laying around and would rather not spend money to rebuild the 6 speed. Is there any way to make the 8 speed work? If so what exactly needs to be done?

Too much to bother.  Both aren't even wired the same TCM wise, etc.  TCM is external on the 8 speeds, internal on the 6 speeds.

Sell the 8, rebuild the 6.

If you are considering that swap, then I say sell both & just go straight to the 10-speed. Or maybe a stick shift?

Neil, sell the 8-speed and use the funds to overhaul the 6-speed, WAY less headache that way.  Get a billet converter with improved internals.
