More trailering electronics fun: "Check rear trailer lamp"

Doesn't matter what trailer I plug in, whether I use a 7 way extension or plug the trailer right into the truck.  The display screen tells me that the running lights are not working.  But they do work.  In fact, they illuminate the second I plug the trailer into the truck with the engine on or off.  They're getting a constant voltage somehow at all times.

 

This in combination with the random brake disconnects has me wondering what on earth is going on with this dumb "smart" trailering setup on this truck.

 

Anyone else seen this?
