Operating Temp

I have a problem of getting up to operating temp. I have 98 Yukon w/ HD towing and cooling. I am only getting up to 170F’ this is killing me at the pump. Any suggestion. I have already tried blocking off the grill but I’m not to keen on this because I don’t want to kill the tranny in the mean time.

Do you have a stock thermostat? If it's stuck in the open position, it'll run cooler than normal, I believe. I'd start there. Chris

I should have mentioned i already changed that. I put in a 195. Thanks

Your radiator cap could be bad. If the cap is bad, it won't build pressure and may run to cold in the winter. My father just had the same problem with my old 96 sonoma.

Gm calls for the 195 T-Stat.

I would also check your temperature sensor. If it's not performing it could affect your temperature gauge reading and also the fuel mileage.

I was thinking along thoese lines. does the temp sensor that controls rthe gauge is that also the sensor that the computer is also reading???

The sensor controls the fuel injector unit which is connected to the computer controlling the amount of fuel to the injectors>

I have had the same problem with my 94 for a while now. New rad. cap new 195 degree thermostat. When it ran normal temp. it would get 17-18 mpg now its only getting 15.
