2021 6.6 GAS GAS 2500 Coolant Level Question.

Hi Gang,  

 

2021 2500

4wd

no oil use

no coolant use

I realize this may be a dimwitted question, but the manual makes it way sound more "complicated" than any other vehicles i've owned in the past. Trucks or bikes.  

 

I have NO low coolant light, but as i check levels routinely, i see i should add a touch to get coolant up to the seam.  Can i just mix it and pour it in to the firewall coolant tank? 

 

Is there really a "leave the cap off, run the truck to temp, yada process etc"  that needs to be adhered too?  Again, gas engine, 6.6L8.  Can i not just top it off?

 

And for all those that say "just follow manual" [ which i don't disagree with ] thanks but still, insight would be appreciated and thanks folks.

The process of running it up the point where the thermostat opens and the coolant flows is to make sure any bubbles that may be in the system due to a low coolant level are allowed to burp out to the expansion tank.  If that occurs, the fluid level would drop and you would top it up to the cold line again before closing the pressure cap.
 

If you have a slightly low level, it is very unlikely you have such bubbles in the system. With the system cold, add the amount of coolant needed to bring it up to the cold line, close it up, and drive normally. Check it again cold next time you think of it and add again if needed. You shouldn’t need to add more if there were no bubbles in the system.
