Bad CV joint???

Looking for some help diagnosing a problem...

When turning to the right (esp at highway speeds), I'm getting a whirring/droning/sound like mud tires on the highway. There is beautiful silence when turning left. The front tires show no signs of uneven wear. I thought it might have been an alignment/ball joint problem, but with no signs of tire wear, I'm leaning toward CV issues. Am I headed in the right direction?

I had the same problem but when turning left and going straight, it was silent when turning right. I too thought it was a worn CV joint, but was wrong. I took it in for service, they fixed the problem and told me that it was a bad or worn drum. sorry for late reply, new here and im just going over posts.

There seems to be a rash of these on the board lately. I have the same problem...they told me it was a bad steering gear box. I haven't gotten it fixed yet, cause they said it still works...just makes noise. I'm not sure it's the steering box though, I think it's something else. I'm going to take it to a different shop to see if they can find something different.

Sounds like it could be the hub assembly. I've had alot of problems with the front end on my '99 Blazer lately. This sounds more like what it was doing when I ended up needing to replace both front hub assemblies. Then I had to replace 2 ball joints shortly after for another problem.

That is what I meant to say, the hub and not the drum as I said earlier, sorry for the mixup. I am not a mechanic. The worn HUB was replaced and it now runs perfectly!!

I had a similar problem on my '96 Jimmy back in 1996, also on the right side. Made a low hum, drone at about 50-60 mph. Put it in 4 wheel drive, disappears. They changed all kinds of stuff. Ended up being the hub. Made noise when it was being pushed along by the rear wheels, but in 4wd it was pulled, differnt force no noise. Don't know if this is what you are taling about. But I have heard it on a friends 99 blazer. Ended up being same thing.

I have the same problem with my car. When I turn right or hit a bump it growls. I took it to the shop and he said it is a wheel bearing. So next week I'm gonna get it fixed.

Be prepared for a hefty bill! Turns out GM designed the hub to house the ABS sensor, so the assembly was something like $200+ bucks (install not included)! Replacing the hub DID solve the problem/noise though.

Yeah when I got my hub assembly replaced I left to take it home and the ABS light was on. I took it back to the shop and the guy said they've had that problem alot, he checked everything and said the bracks would be fine for the weekend and to bring it back on Monday morning (this was closing time on Saturday) when he could get a new one for me. He said they had at least 10 new hub assemblies come in that the ABS sensor didn't work and made the light come on.
