Steering shaft clunk

Greetings,

My 2001 has had the dreaded steering shaft clunk for some time ( I am at 57K). I just read the about fix (which GM didnt bother to inform me about). My concern is that I may have damaged the shaft by driving it "dry" for so long. Any thoughts?

I wondered that too, the second time I brought mine in under warranty they replaced the shaft (or so they said, I never actually checked).
