Binder49 Posted September 5, 2025 Posted September 5, 2025 I am going to attempt some rust repair on my 2014 Silverado, welding with a mig welder. I wanted know if I need to disconnect the negative battery cable before welding. I am going to use a repair panel above the right rear wheel. I have never tried this before, and advice would be appreciated. Thanks
CamGTP Posted September 5, 2025 Posted September 5, 2025 Yes, you must disconnect the power. Honestly just take the both cables off the battery to be 100% sure. Sheet metal welding is an art. You can't really weld beads, you are going to have to tac weld it a million times. You also can not do one section for very long because the thin metal will warp. Do a couple welds, then go completely across to the other side. Keep jumping around to not heat one section too much. Watching youtube video's is helpful too. 2
davester Posted September 6, 2025 Posted September 6, 2025 Yes, learn how to do it on scrap sheet metal of the same thickness, until you can do it well w/o blowing holes in it all the time, then start on your truck. And put the ground clamp as near as possible to where you are welding, grinding a clean spot for it to clamp to. 2
