First Sierra purchase, have been a Ford truck owner and want to try something new.  I'm looking at a 2021 3.0 Duramax with the SLT package, preferably with 8" touch screen and Nav.  What should I look for when test driving used trucks?  I've driven 3 so far and they felt dramatically different, some had a lot of engine noise while others were super quiet.  One had a noticeable downshift while coming to a stop, while the others didn't flare when shifting.  Some had a very sensitive throttle (checked that they were all in the same mode, put in Normal before test driving) and others had the normal turbo lag you'd expect from a diesel.

 

I'm finding it odd that all of these trucks are between 99-120k miles.  Is there something specific that results in people trading these in around this timeframe?  Most were 1-owner, used personally, and CARFAX showed "engine/powertrain checked" or "emissions system checked" but doesn't show the actual repair.

 

Looking at both GMC dealerships and independent car lots, is there any benefit to going to a tier-1 dealership (such as Carmax) for warranty options?  I have never purchased a used car and bought the extended warranty.

 

Last, what's up with all the trucks having the Treble cranked to +12 on the radio (both Bose and non-Bose options)?  Every single one I drove was set that way by the previous owner.  Are the speakers lacking, or did I test drive 3 back-to-back with the dash tweeters blown?

90-120k is when you are going to start having transmission problems, even if it has been serviced the valve body wears out and next thing you know you have burnt clutchs and the cost of a rebuild, let alone the torque converter prolems

Yes.  They don't want to pay for the oil pump belt job due at 150,000mi.  Or they had 10 speed issues like valve body.  Oh and emissions sensor problems.  

 

Bass to 12?  Take it back to neutral and you'll see why lol.  Especially on the non Bose trucks.

Ouch, that's why I left Ford.  Both my 10R80 and a friend's 10R80 had valve body problems.  And on his, he barely towed.  Mine eventually got the CDF drum, but it never drove right, so I ended up selling at a loss.

So it sounds like a thorough check of the transmission (assuming these have a "fast relearn" mode) will be a good idea.  Or look for one that's had its 10-speed recently rebuilt.

 

Haven't touched the radio settings, but yes - almost every truck had bass at or near +12 and treble at +12.  Felt odd as on Fords and Rams, especially with premium audio, the door panels would be shaking with such settings.

 

Goal is to tow a travel trailer cross country and use the truck for long trips.  No in-town driving or local use, I have a car.  I see some with ultra high mileage (160-200k) going for the same price as lower mileage units, would you think those may be a better buy?

Given trucks like the above, would the 161k version with recent repairs be a better buy than the lower mileage ones?  I could care less about what the odometer says, I would rather have one that is more reliable and doesn't leave the trailer stranded at a campsite.

Would the best option be to use a local dealer?  I'll be flying into town, most dealers I've called want to charge to do a used car inspection.  Can get expensive if I'm comparing 3+ trucks on the same day, not to mention scheduling.

 

All I see on CARFAX reports is "Engine/powertrain checked" or "Emissions system serviced" and on a few, "Transmission replaced" or "Valve body replaced" which is concerning.  A lot of "Transmission Replaced" prior to 140k so I guess I'll have to plan for some extra cash in case of an emergency.

 

Is it normal for the 10L80 to downshift hard and flare when coming to a stop?  I've now experienced it enough (along with some rear end noise when test driving) that I don't know what's a normal 10L80 in non-sport or Tow-Haul mode.  Some trucks downshifted cleanly, others lurched and jerked as the RPMs jumped around even in Normal mode.

Thank you.  I ended up passing on that truck, it was $29k with 99k miles and local to me (Illinois).  Played that game once before, passed a much better condition vehicle for one that was closer.  $10k in engine work and $6k in transmission work later, it never drove right, and by that point the age & mileage made it worth close to nothing.  I now remind myself, a plane ticket and an Uber is a lot cheaper than buying the local truck with issues and having buyer's remorse.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
