Tough Screw

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to dump my tranny fluid. But the screw plug on the transmission is stuck. Maybe I'm not a real strong guy, but all the pulling, pushing, banging, doesn't seem like the plug likes it. Anyone have a suggestion on how to get this plug off?

It's really hard because I don't have any good angles for leverage.

Thanks,

Spray it with PB Blaster and let it soak.

(Rule of thumb: If there isn't a wet fart in your pants, then you aren't wrenching as hard as you can!!!)

use a 6 point socked so udont round the bolt off, and use a good length torque bar, it shouldnt be to hard though.... seeing that the upper half is soaking in oil :loser: maybe some a$$ at the jiffy lube got carried away some where in the past, those places are known for that

PB Blaster. Great to know. I will pick some up tomorrow after work.

Well, after posting, I tried again, using my leg. I started rounding off the top, stop I stopped. I am using a 6pt socket (15mm).

But good idea about using a longer wrench. Have to remember physics from high school :loser:

Thanks!

Believe it or not, if you will try tightening the nut until you

get a tiny bit of movement then loosen it. What this does is

it actually helps separate the threads. It's always worked

for me. :loser:

Preferred method: Breaker bar, 2-3 ft long piece of pipe as a cheater bar. Not the best, but it always cracks the bolts for me.

Now, if you're rounding it off - I'd suggest going with locking pliers to grip the bolt and not round it off any further.

Ok, before you try the following, may I suggest a more experienced person confirm this: Spray some PB Blaster, then use a heat gun to warm up the bolt. This should allow the stuff to thin out a little and get further into the bolt to help loosen it up. Just a thought - this has worked for me on rusted bolts.

Never thought about tightening the bolt! Good idea! I'll do a combination of everything all of you said! :loser: Spray the PB on and use a 2-3' pipe to tighten the bolt a bit :loser: THE THING BETTER COME OFF!

Thanks! :loser:

Before you go any further, it would probably be a good idea to get a new bolt to replace the old one with after the service is done.

If you dont have it off by now, and the bolt is now rounded, clamp vise grips on REALLY tight and put a pipe aginst the vise grip where the adjustment screw goes in and give the pipe a hard sharp smack with a hammer. It will come loose. I have found over the years a stubborn bolt or nut usually gives with the help of SUDDEN IMPACT. :loser:

if its that tight i think i would put some heat on the thing b4 u mangle up the threads on the pan, just my 2 cents but a little heat loosens everything, expands the bolt hole and softens any corrosion or crud thats in the threads..... might save u the cost of a new pan

first thing go to the dealer and get a new bolt. On my 02 i had to by one of the bolt out tools that craftsman sells. tap that on the bolt then u put a wrench over it. I still could budge mine so i had to get out the trusty impact to do the trick one blip with it and it came right off. :loser:

Amen, a friend and I went to drain mine and figured it'd be tight, so we used a Benzomatic to loosen it up. I then put some pb blaster on a few minutes later and she loosened up like butter.
