What do you do for a living?

 Well post up! What does everyone do for career/living/get by..lol

I work for an excellent engineering company that bids & wins contracts for FDOT (Florida Dept. of Transportation) roadway/bridge projects. Once they win the bid, my job begins.

Bottom line I am a road/bridge inspector. I ensure that the contractor/subcontractor is building the road/bridge to FDOT specifications by-the-book, so it's safe for you, your wife, children and grandmother to drive on.

You'd be VERY suprised at what some of these contractors try to get away with. If it wasnt for us, probally 50% of the roads would fail.

I love my job, take GREAT pride in it and do things right. I see it as many lives ride on my decisions every day.

The only thing I'm up against--I'm 22yrs old. Try telling someone that's old enough to be your grandfather that they arent following specs and to re-do what they just attempted to slide by me...:eek:

SO--What do you do?

Computer programmer....Mostly DB programming..testing applications and the sort. This summer I'm hopefully I'm gonna get trained in computer forensics, so I can do really cool s**t. If I had my way I would be a photographer though. Right now it's just a hobby.

In my mind I'm also a Ninja.

My title is Control Engineer. The company I work for bids on jobs from automotive companies (we also do a small amount of work for grain handling, plastic extrusion, and coal processing companies) to handle the controls portion of their assembly lines. Once we get the contract, the company designs and builds (everthing from making the metal enclosures to mounting parts and all wiring) the control panels, operator stations, and panelviews. We also write all of the PLC programs needed to run the systems in the way desired by the customers.

Once the panels are built and shipped out, the engineers are sent out to supervise the install, start up the systems, and stay around for standby during production to fix any problems that come up. I would say that approximately 1/3rd of my time on the job is spent in GM/Ford assembly plants. So far it sounds like my summer is going to be split between a short job in Detroit, and then onto our major jobs in either Hermosillo, Mexico or Shreveport, LA.

btw, I understand what you are saying about being a younger guy (22 as well) and trying to tell older people what to do. Only thing is, I get to deal with UAW workers as well.

I USED to mow lawns for 7 of the houses my grandpa owns in my neighborhood, but then I got "fired". Hell, $400 a month suited me just fine!

Right now I'm selling cell phones  , but I've got less than 2 weeks left before I go back into graphics design. I've accepted a job with the Billings Gazette doing ad layout and graphcis design! WOOT! No more customer service, and commission-based-income-rollercoaster-rides.

I also work part time for myself doing website design and computer service

Well, after some time while in school doing the hourly wage with no benefits customer service deal, I got the call from one city I had taken the civil service test for, and the rest is 5yrs of history as a suburban cop...hopefully soon to be 1 of 4 in our new motorcycle unit.
