160 thermostat problem

Recommended Posts

I just put in a Hypertech 160 thermostat today. The problem is that the temperature stays at around 180. Is that normal? I would assume it is supposed to stay at 160. I checked the box and it is a 160 but maybe a 180 was put in there.

thanks,

the thermostat opens at 160.. doesnt mean you will stay at 160.. The engine puts out way too much heat, to keep it below 160. Mine is a 180, and the truck runs just under 200 when hot.

Automotive thermostats for the main radiator only manage the MINIMUM temperature.

The rest of the cooling system components, their sensors and set points for when to turn on, how much to turn on, etc then dictate the temperature range based on the above.

The other thing to keep in mind is the gauges in most cars are dummy gauges. They only read an average and will only go into the 'red' if their is a failure or the sensor is broken. Most people dont even look at them! Thats what I love about trucks is that they have such an informative instrument cluster. You dont get that in a Honda Civic!
