My rear brakes are locking up

99 Silverado reg cab stepside.

When I brake hard the rear wheels seem to locking up and squeeling. Its not an all out screech but it is noticable and IMO a safety issue. The truck isn't fishtailing - it actually brakes completely straight.

Advice please.

Keep in mind, if the truck's not loaded the rear end is very light. During a hard stop (depending on the condition of your tires) the rear wheels will have a tendancy to lock up even with the anti-lock system. It probably isn't that the tires are locking up completely but they will tug at the pavement and make a little noise during those 'panic' stops. If it's not fish-tailing and is tracking straight, that means the anti-lock is working. That's what it's for. If it's not that, you may want to double check your rear brake pads. If they're thin, they could be getting over-heated and squealing a little. Hopefully, though, that kind of 'panic' stop doesn't happen too often.

When we test drove (purcahsed used) it my dad noticed it and said something about it. They said they adjusted it. Prom night some ugly 4 legged creature ran out in front of me and I hit on them pretty well (but I didn't have the pedal to the floor or anything) and they squealed some.

were you going over any bump(s) when it happened? When I had the stock tires I found the abs to kick in when applying the brakes while going over bumps

I'm not sure of these newer ABS systems but I'm pretty sure the '99 still has the proportioning valves in the brakes' master cylinder. On the older trucks, the drum brakes could be adjusted by backing up and slamming on the binders but the rear disk brakes I'm sure you have should be self adjusting. Ask the dealer if they messed with your ABS and proportioning valves on your brakes.

From how you describe it, you must drive like ya stole it~ Slow Down!! take it easy... gas ain't gettin any cheaper.

iF YOU HAVE DRUM BRAKES CHECK TO SEE IF THE WHEEL CYLENDERS ARE LEAKING,iF FLUID GETS INTO THE DRUMS THEY WILL LOCK UP.....

HE SAID IT WAS A 99 RADO WHICH HAS REAR DISC BRAKES

if it only does it on 'panic' stops i wouldnt worry about it too much.
