2004 2500HD Transmission recall

Here's a tip: If you got the recall letter for the 4L80-E, y'all better get your truck into the dealer ASAP. My transmission went south as I was heading in to the Red Wings game last week, 2200 miles on the truck. Needless to say, I missed the game. :D

The worst part is I bought 5 identical trucks for my company and they ALL need new trannys. It's a nightmare.

Is this only for the 2004 HD's? The 4L-80E in my 2003 2500HD s**t the bed at about 9,700 miles! It didn't just go out, it was completely destroyed because most of the clutches fell out when the pan was pulled. To put it mildly, it was ugly!

Now I have a factory new 4L-80E which was installed about a month ago. Will this tranny be under the recall as well?

What is the extent of this recall? Is it only '04 models with certain build dates?

I must have been working hard (yeah right!) and not logged on when this news broke.

Does anyone know if this recall applies to the 2004HD Suburban? My vehicle order detail sheet from the dealer says my trans is an MT1- Transmission, H.D. 4-speed Auto w/Overdrive. Any suggestions?

As far as I know, It only applys to a relatively short window of production early this year (like Jan-Feb). My hunch is If you don't have the letter by now, you're OK.

I absolutely need my trucks on the road right now so this is a major pain. :D

still havent gotten the letter but they say it'll have to be changed..

40k truck and has problems in less than 2000 miles. That's BS....I have my 03 f150 4x4 that has 50k on it in less than 7 months, gets the hell beat out of it every day and not one single problem, noise, squeek, or rattle.

I read this post a while back and didn't think anything of it. Well, my new truck is in the shop now with a torn up tranny at 4000 miles. They tore apart the transmission and found missing teeth and some kind of spacers not working properly I guess. I was too shocked by the amount of parts torn up so I wasn't really paying attention to names of parts (just looking at them). Just seems kind of crazy. Its not even snowmobile season yet, so I haven’t even really USED this truck yet. Pretty disappointing… Anyway, mine was making a grinding type noise when in reverse going at a moderate speed. Just an FYI to keep your ears open if you own a 04HD. I didn’t think too much of the noise in reverse, but having read this post a while back I had the dealer check out this noise just to be safe. Guess it’s a good thing to keep an eye on this board; you never know when something may be able to help you out.

hi guys,

i realize that a transmission failing is a real pain in the

ass. keep in mind that all auto brands have their fair

share of failures. from Mercedes Benz to Kia. no

manufacturer is immune. keep your chins up

I have heard the 4l80 is a better than the allison as far as taking abuse. This is the first major problem I've heard of with these transmissions. I work for a dealer that is a medium duty Isuzu dealer and replace very few 4l80s, alot of the aisin and jatco though.

While the 4L80 has improved over the years, your statement is not correct. The Allison is built far more stout than the 4L65 or the 4L80. Please check your specs.

That's just what I heard. I am sure the allison will handle more hp and torque, thats why it is behind the Duramax.

I wish they would make the allison the standard automatic in the hd trucks.

I have searched many location about this recall and no true documentation with vin ranges, production date range etc. Any one know of any links or have any of the technical bullitens regarding this issue??
