Exhaust on my 8.1

It's about time I put some pipes on my 2001 2500HD 8.1/6speed.

I'm thinking of going with Flowmaster's 50 Series Big Block, Dual 3 in. Inlets/Dual 2.5 in. Outlets (Summit p/n FLO-530504). Then having a local muffler shop run 2.5 pipes out each side with a pair of 18" SS echo tips. I just hope this combo won't be too quiet. Flowmaster no longer recommends this muffler for the 6.0 because of resonance, but it should sound sweet with my 8.1

I drove another truck that had the 8.1 / 6 speed and a pair of Flowmaster 40's (no H pipe) and it sounded just a little rough to me, I think an H pipe would have helped alot.

Bottom line though, at $119 the FLO-530504 would cost a lot less than 2 single mufflers and an H or X pipe.

Has anyone seen a truck with the FLO-530504? Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. I was thinking of hacking off my stock muffler to see how loud it was with just the cats, I wonder if I could sell the stock exhaust, it would be a quiet free-er flowing option for someone with a 6.0

check it out at Summit (half way down the page FLO-530504)

There's an 01 or 02 2500hd 8.1 litre with straight pipes right out the back, running around my town. I tell you what, it sounds SICK!! It is LOUD and it sounds d**n good when he romps on it.

Well, I ordered the 50 series Flowmaster and a pair of "Big Wazoo" 18x3.5in SS tips from Summit. I hope it arrives by early next week so I can get to the muffler shop (I have a week of vacation) and get my torque monster breathing right.

Hey, good luck, Ted! Hope it sounds like you want it to; from what I've heard, their big-block muffler should sound great with the 8.1. Let us know how it turns out!

I got my exhast put on! The dual in/dual out Flowmaster 50 series big block muffler was just what I was looking for -- deep and mellow, without being obnoxious. Lets that 496 talk to me a little as I'm rowing through the gears. The muffler shop (Reagans muffler in So. Fulton, TN) did a great job running the dual 2.5" pipes (angled out the sides behind the rear tires). I am glad to see that the Hedman Hedder "Big Wazoo" stainless tips are made in USA. The muffler shop had some chinese stainless tips that I passed on.

I cut the stock exhaust off myself and drove it around without a muffler for 2 days, it sounded mean dumping out under the bed like that. I terrorized the countryside with it.

I'll try to post some pics soon
