Need a tire recommendation

Recommended Posts

It's time to put new tires on my Silverado, and I'm not sure what brand to go with. I have 265's on there now and want to stick with the same size. I do mostly highway driving, no off roading whatsoever, so I don't need too aggressive of a tread. However, I do live in Michigan, so I need something that'll do good in the snow. What do you guys recommend for price, noise, and durability? Thanks!

I'm sure somewhere along the line someone will mention the BFG All-Terrain TA KO's I guess I just beat them to the punch :flag: - I have them on mine and love them - daily driver and I live in MD - road noise is slim to none and the ride is better than the stock tires - honestly I don't think you can go wrong with either the Bridgestones or the BFG's

I second the revos, they're the quietest truck tire I've ever heard, plus they handle like a champ on and off road.

tirerack.com has a consumer survey on all types of tires, you might want to check them out. (of course they do list the revos as the best :flag: )

I too am getting ready to put new tires on my truck. All of the folks that I have asked have recomended either the BFG All Terrains and the Bridgestone Dueler Revos. Both of these tires are at the top of the list on tirerack.com.

After talking to folks for the last couple of months about tires, I have decided on the Revos. I just like the way the tire looks! So far, I have not heard one negative comment about them. Of course, I haven't heard much bad about the BFGs either.

I also really like the looks of the Goodyears on my wife's Tahoe, but they rank pretty well down the list on tirerack and I've heard a couple of stories about treadwear with them, so I tossed them out of the running.

Only a few more weeks and I'll let ya know how I like the Revo's on my Silverado.

I agree! I love my REVO's!

Not that any of those tires are bad, but for somebody who does zero off-road, you really don't need BFGs in my opinion.

I would go to Big-O. They have a pretty good warranty, and great customer service around here.

If you need a pic, I can put one up in the morning (I'm at work right now). But the tires I'm talking about had two grooves in them...Kinda like an "aquatread" sort of thing.

I bought them when I lived in Denver, and they did better than BFGs on the snow and ice by a long shot, and still looked great at 60k miles when I took them off. (I got a new set of wheels/tires for the Blazer is the only reason that I took them off.)

The contractor that built my house had a set of them on his Nissan that lasted to 90k :flag: Big-O was running a deal on them that if you got to 100k with them they would give you a free set. He was ticked when one blew out just shy of that.

If you do mostly highway driving, look at the Michelin LTX M/S. I second the previous posts suggesting you read the Tirerack.com customer reviews, they'll answer your questions about price, durability, road noise and more. The Michelin's are in the Highway All-Season category. The Bridgestone Revo and BFG All-Terrain are in the Off-Road/All-Terrain category and have more aggresive tread designs.

I have put both the LTX M/S and the A/T tires on my families vehicles. Wear is about the same (lil more for the M/S). Traction IS better with the L/T and in Michigan I would go with the better traction. Both tires are supremely quiet and very round.

Ya, you pay more but you get more mileage out of the tire and a better (and quieter) ride.

I use to sell/install tires and really the michelin's are about the best you can buy. I can't wait for these general ameri-kraps to wear down on my '02, then it LTX's baby!

Another vote for the revo's. My previous tire was the procomp A/t. It lasted a long time (50,000 miles) but were nothing but trouble when it came to balancing. I have 285/75/16 revos now and they are an awesome tire. The price is a lot better than the BFG's also.

You are correct sir. I've got about 30k on mine and love them. The stock Wilderness AT's were replaced at 36k. The wet traction on the Revos is a drastic improvement over the stock tires. They're also great in the snow. I noticed no noticeable loss of mileage. The tread has an aggressive look, but they're still quiet. Finally, the big seller for me- price. They were considerably cheaper than the Michelins and others I priced out. I got a buy 3 get the 4th deal...which also included the balance, road hazard, etc.

I put on about 100k a year and my last two sets on a 2002 Silverado 2wd have been NOKIAN. They are an awesome all-weather tire, not a snow tire but I do run them all year round. They are quite and have great traction. By the way I'm in Canada and up here a "k" is a kilometer (about 0.62 miles)

I second the Michelin post. I have them on my truck and love them. here in B.C. where we live in the rain they handle really well and give a smooth quiet ride.

They are pricey but give the truck a nice look with the white letters out.
