They are currently testing it on an X5, with achieved over 1000 Nm of Torqe around 1,000 RPM when combining the electric and fuel motor's output, while achieveing fuel economy increase of 16%. That is over a whopping 737.56 ft-lb's of Torque!!!! take that, Cummin's Turbo-Diesel! Too bad BMW will probably never make a dedicated Truck.

Yeah but it is mounted in the drive shaft area and 1000 rpm there is 20 to 30 MPH depending on gear ratio. In lower tranny gear with a V8 you can have well over 1000ftlbs of drive shaft torque easily.

R Dogg 56 Posted September 27, 2004 Posted September 27, 2004 I have to give credit where credit's due, though. If BMW can pull it off, it'll be a major step in vehicle technology. I can see this application in the big rigs if it's not already there, albeit they can already produce up to and over the indicated number for lb-ft. In that case, we could see trucks like Mercedes Benz, Freightliner and many other truck companies that have a huge foreign (European) clientele putting this techonology to use and seeing +2000 lb-ft from the same engines that the trucks use over there. But like everything else, we'll just have to wait and see.
