GM truck airbag crash data

You may or may not know.....but your airbag SDM module records crash data. This data can be downloaded after a accident event. It can provide up to 5 seconds of vehicle data prior to a deployment event. Data such as vehicle speed, brake input, etc.

You can see the equipment that is used at-

www.airbagcrash.com

The current north american high speed download is 142 mph. This case was a Corvette racing a Mercedes Benz. The Corvette cut a Jeep in half that was turning left. The Corvette driver survived. 4 people dead in the Jeep.

The highest download WE have done is 97 mph. 2001 Cavalier. Unbelted. The driver did survive.

These recording SDMs (aka 'the black box') are currenty installed in a zillion GM trucks. GM trucks account for over 1/2 of GM sales.

Just a heads up. Many owners do not know this equipment exists.....it does. So watch out......

Any questions about the airbag SDM.....we will try to answer.....

Yeah I knew they had them. I belive f-bodies have had them since 1993. Not sure when they started putting them in trucks and stuff.

BTW, if my airbag had deployed and the data had been recorded, and they had the stuff to reteive that info here, I think I would have broken that record for the highest speed :chevy::troll::eek:

The 'mechanical' airbag modules do not have crash data recovery using the Vetronix CDR. GM electronic SDM s do....

So currently....the '93 F body is not a supported vehicle.

Here is a list of supported vehicles using the Vetronix CDR:

I do have a question for you though. Doesn't the thingy also record 50 near misses? Like extremely hard braking? If so what type things are near misses?

Posted

Sorry, I thought your post said 1993. I see now you wrote 'since 1993'... The 1996 F body does have a recording SDM.

Most 1999 and later airbag SDM s can record 'near deployment' data. Near deployment data is not hard written in the module. So it will clear after 250 ignition key cycles ....or....another 'near' deployment can write over it. You can get a 'near' deployment record hitting the brakes hard over some speed bumps kind of thing.

Once there is a deployment. That data is hard written into the SDM module. It cannot be erased. Afte a deployment the airbag SDM must be replaced.

There are some Corvette owners who drag race their cars. They most likely are getting 'near' deployment records every time to pull the chute at 150 mph.

Yeah, I know the near deployment worries a lot of people that race often. Most are worried that if they were making some runs at the dragstrip and had a wreck the next day that those records could be used against them, saying they had a pattern of unsafe driving.

How often is the data retrieved in wrecks? Is it only in certain cases or what? Do most insurance companies have the software to retrieve the data?

Posted

I have a question....when they retrieve the data, do they take the entire computer out, or can the access it through the data port under the dash??

Posted

Speedy- Yes, if that was to happen....it could make some feel you have poor driving habits. Its possible near deployment data could be stored for up to 2 months (about 250 key cycles in normal use.)

TMF6902- The actual airbag SDM computer is not very big. About 5 x 5 inches. It is possible to download the data directly from the vehicle ALDL/OBDII connector. We have concerns about harness crash damage etc shorting out our CDR tool......so we much perfer having the SDM module out of the car. The SDM data can be downloaded out of the car.

GM dealers do not use this equipment. Thats why we have this mail in program to get your crash data if needed. In our opion....we think everyone should have the module downloaded if they have a deployment event. Basically to protect yourself from any future lawsuits etc.

I wonder if driving off road so show up as a near miss on the module. I have had to gun it over going over so bumpy roads in order to not get stuck and and I know the front end has landed hard a few times because I did not see a hole or rut whiel driving offroad at night.

Posted

Sure....off roading can set near-deployment records. No question about it.

We actually get alot of call about the truck airbags NOTdeploying during a accident event. One of the examples we use is ' these trucks are used off road all the time....some design is in the system to prevent non desired deployments.

It takes a pretty good wack to deploy the truck bags. The GM SDM modules look for a change of acceleration on the X axis of the vehicle to command a deployment.

So you say that you can get about 5 seconds of data from it after a crash.....that's all the data it collects I assume? So it re writes the latest data continuesly(sp)? I guess I'm just curious as to why it doesn't collect more data than that....why not keep the last hour of driving time. Also does it keep steering wheel input? Sorry for all the questions, I have heard of the black boxes before I just never knew I had one.

There was a drunk driving accident near where I live about 2 years ago, and they said the BB had a lot to do with the conviction, the guy broadsided 2 girls backing out of their driveway, at impact they said he was doing 104 and was accelorating.

Posted

Spell check...

We actually get alot of calls about the truck airbags NOT deploying during an accident event. One of the examples we use is ' these trucks are used off road all the time....some design is in the system to prevent non desired deployments'.

Posted

Yeah....we know about that one in Florida. The Mato's case.

"When Edwin Matos killed the girls, he didn't know his car would become a witness for the prosecution.

Like millions of Americans, Matos had no idea his car contained an electronic device recording what he did just before the crash, but it was information that would help send him to prison.

Matos was driving the 2002 Pontiac Trans Am in a 30 mph zone of a suburb near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., when the car driven by a teenage girl pulled out of a driveway into his path.

The driver and her friend died instantly.

Defense lawyer Robert Stanziale said Matos was going about 60 mph. Assistant State Prosecutor Michael Horowitz said that his accident investigator calculated Matos was traveling about 98 mph. The electronic data recorder in Matos' car showed his peak speed was 114 mph in the seconds before the crash.

Last month, the information from the EDR helped convict Matos of two counts of manslaughter and two counts of vehicular homicide."

The SDM is always counting seconds...as one second is added....one is dropped off.

As for seconds....5 seconds is a bunch of data. This is memeory chips vs a airline box using digital tape. Basically its 'free' data thats available.

Being a GM Tech....to us. Its really cool, cool stuff...

Steering angle would be a nice feture. 99% of the vehicles out there do not have any type of steering angle sensor installed to measure such data.

Posted

Yeah that accident happend about a mile away from my apartment. With the cost a memory being so low now, I was just curious why they don't log more data.

    • Update for anyone following:    Installed everything as shown in diagram. Opted for 8 AWG from Battery Positive to a 50A resettable inline breaker. 8 AWG is tied into to 2x 12 AWG wires feeding a 6 way fuse bus in parallel (manufacturer’s design of what I purchased).    4 of the 6 fuses available for circuits are tied to terminal 30 of each relay. I tied a jumper from one of my spare circuits off the bus to terminal 86 of each relay. The trigger, terminal 85, was pulled from my interior by way of T-Taps from the X61A-X5 pins 10, 11, 17 and 23. This was the hardest part of the job. Even with the X61A unbolted and the X5 removed - there was VERY little wiggle room.  I added back up lights that I want to come on with my cargo lamp - but when I would check continuity between S48A-X1 pin 18 to its respective landing point on the X61A-X5 it triggers the factory relay… Instead I opted for a add-a-fuse on the passenger interior fuse panel (fuse location 10 - cargo lamp) and ran it through the boot on the driver side to my load. Did this to avoid introducing any electrical gremlins.   Note: Please check for continuity between the S48A-X1 and the X61A-X5. In my case wire colours were not the same as other’s who have posted. To do a continuity check you need a Multimeter. Completely disassemble the S48A-X1 and remove the brown face plate off the X61A-X5 by way of a flat head screwdriver - this was the only way I could get any results.   The outputs, terminal 87 of the relays, were fed into a junction box and landed at Individual studs and were labelled Aux 1-4.    At this point, all you need to do is run wire to your loads and bring them to ground. I created a negative bus in the engine bay, all my negatives land here.    For anyone having issues with all of your new aux switch lights coming on with the press of one - I noticed this only to be an issue when the battery wasn’t hooked up to my relays? No idea why, but it was quickly corrected by having my system buttoned up and functional.
    • Well I ordered the Autel ts508, and it won't work on my truck I tried all the 2023 and everything it just says vehicle not supported lol   I'm able to send this unit back, so I'm going to do that, then I'll just stop into a some tire shops and if none of them are able to do it, I guess ill have to spend a bunch of money to get a good scanner..... Thanks GM lol
    • Don't need the air tube but that's how everyone sells them. Most places won't remove that one piece and sell it alone. No money to be made. Hoping someone swapped theirs out for a CAI and no longer wants it. Not asking anyone to give it away. Offering to buy it but I don't need the tube. It's held on by a hex head screw and nut. Been all over eBay.
