Steering Problem

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with a problem where there steering is very "jerky", for lack of a better word, when going through a steady state turn. While going around gentle bends, the steering wheel will jerk one way or the other. Sometimes also, when you are turning the wheel, it seems that it is somewhat stuck, and then lets go and jerks in the direction you're turning. Any ideas what could be going wrong?

Thanks...Wade

Are you sure it is not stuck in 4WD?

Had the same thing with my truck, common problem with a cheap fix (I believe $30). Mine felt like I was driving on ice going around corners at certain speeds, usually the steering wheel was at the 2-3 or 10-11 o'clock position when it would all of a sudden jerk to one side real quick. It's the EVO sensor, here's exactly what I found in one of my posts about this problem a year ago. "P/N 26064468

It's located at the bottom of the steering column, under the dash. GM says it takes 1 hour to install. The sensor I listed above is for a '97 Tahoe, which I would assume to be the same thing as you GMC. The symptoms you described fit with what this Tahoe is doing. I got the sensor for about 35 bucks at the local dealership. I haven't tried to install the switch yet, but I hope it takes care of the problem" Shaners posted it.

The part # was the correct one for my 97 Silverado. I got it from PartsZone vendor on the left of the screen. Cheapest place by far compared to local dealer. I had no idea how to change it, but once you get it and see exactly what it looks like, easy fix, just a couple bolts inside the cab like described above. Took me about 25 minutes to change. I believe it was a 10mm socket or 1/2". Make sure you disconnect your negative battery cable, while doing it. I wanted to be sure the airbag wasn't going to malfunction while I disconnected the steering column. Just for safety reasons. Look up EVO sensor in the search engine here on the site, you'll find lots of questions. Good luck, Chris
