cabin filter

I need info on these cab filters everyone is talking about. I didn't even know they existed until i bought my truck. I own a 2002 GMC Sierra and would like to change these. Are there two of them between the box and cab? How do you get them out? How much do they cost? Anyone with info on this would be a big help! What do these filters do exactly. How is it set up to work?

Thanks this forum kicks ass!! I've learned a lot by reading these posts.

There are 2 filters. No one ever satifactorily explained to me the need for two.

Just as you would suspect, they filter solid particles out of the air. But you can go one step further and buy a charcoal filter that is available as an option which will filter odors also.

Getting the second filter out is tough. Putting it back in is near impossible. I have to admit that when I changed mine, I only put one filter back in (gave up on trying to stuff the back one in). Like I said, I don't know why there are two filters to start with.

Other than that, the screw over the transmission hump (or behind the floor console) is recessed up in about an inch or so. Makes it another lousy job getting to, removing and replacing. Most people suggest not removing this screw all the way, just partially unscrew and leave in its socket. I found this difficult to work with, so I removed the screw. Made me wish I had listened to them when I tried to replace it. I solved this problem by using a magnetic screw holder for a cordless drill to hold the screw until I could get it started.

Hope this helps. Yea, this forum does kick butt.

there has to be 2 in order to be able to replace the filters. 1 filter that is equal to the size of the 2 individual ones would not have enough room to come out. just pull the second filter towads the back of the truck and it slides out just like the first one did.

???

if you only put one back in it isnt doing anything. air follows the path of least resistance, and going around the filter offers much less resistance than going thru it.

follow the guide. this is really quite simple to do correctly...
