6.0 vs. 6.0HO

Ive seen in certain trucks/SUVs you can get a 6.0HO. What are the differences between the 6.0HO(I think its 345hp instead of 300) and the standard 6.0 that my '01 2500HD has? Can the std. 6.0 be upgraded? Is it worth the effort?

Also, anyone getting better than 13MPG with a 6.0? I consistently get 13. Mileage would be nice, but more power would be even better.

TIA

Matt,

The LQ9, the 6.0HO, has .6 more compression than the LQ4 regular 6.0. The only difference mechanically are the pistons and rods. All other parts are the same, heads, cam everything. The major difference is the tune, the HO is tuned for 91 octane, and all the others are tuned for 87 octane.

Time for a custom tune! My Wester's 93 Hot tune gets me 13.5 mpg around town and 17 on the highway on my 6.0 with 4:10 gears. Lots more power and throttle response too!

I can second that...

I have a 93 Octane hot tune on my 01' HD and did it ever wake up the 6.0L under the hood. I see basically the same fuel number as stated by Butch. The additional power and improved all around driveability is a beautiful thing. The factory tuning is mild to say the least... A custom tune works wonders for these trucks...

I too have the westers 93 hot tune, and it made a world of difference - much more power & throttle response.

For those of you with the 93 hot tune do you do any towing? And if so how does the hot tune react to it?? I am thinking of getting one for my Suburban but was debating if I should get the dual tune or the hot tune. I don't tow often but I want to be able to if needed.

I had no problem towing my dads spray machine which weighed over 12,000 lbs. So I really don't think towing would be a problem. Go for it!

Great thread! I have a question... is a Westers tune (or the others) really THAT much different than a Hypertech III 93 octane tune? I have the Hypertech III tuner and is noticably different than stock but I wonder how they compare to the Westers and others?

Any thoughts?

Like night and day!

I had a Hypertech III and a Superchips in my truck before the Wester's. Neither compare, not even close!

Try Wester's 30 day test drive, if you don't agree, send it back, it'll only cost you the return shipping!

Did you guys get near the 17 mpgs before the hot tune? I have never heard of a 6.0 with 4.10s getting anywhere near that.

You may also want to look into www.pcmforless.com or www.nelsonperformance.com. They also do an awesome job with custom tunes. Or for the do it yourselfer, try either LS1 Edit or HP Tuners. Just my .02.
