bigdogs Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 I didn't think that was possible with newer vehicles other than replacing the whole instrument cluster.
Wingnut Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 That's what I was thinking, but considering how much they made by selling it as new vice used...I would think that it would quite cost effective for them to do exactly that.
MyBigToy Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 You can reset or change the mileage on the odometer. Lots of people do it when they replace the stock gage cluster with an upgrade. You just have to locate a speedometer shop that has the equipment to do it. I would love to put a Denali cluster in my Avalanche to get the tranny temp gage and the 120 mph speedometer but don't want to go through the hassle of getting the mileage transferred to the new cluster. The shops sometimes want you to send both clusters to them to assure they are transferring the correct mileage.

I didn't think they could do that anymore with the problems of odometer fraud etc. I guess it has both good and bad points as you don't know if the mileage it says is truly accurate...
tmf6902 Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 The Milage is kept a bunch of other places besides the Odometer. When I got my escalade cluster, I didn't have to give them my old one....I took it to the shop...the guy walked to my truck...wrote down the milage...and the next day I picked it up.
5.3LSilverado01 Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 Milage fruad is pretty serious... My dad made a joke about if i had set my s-10s milage back (trade in) when they were signing for my silverado and the dealer guy said woah, thats like yelling bomb in a airport....
GF7PE Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 the nbs gms are easy to disconnect but like it was said before, its stored in a bunch of other places too
bigdogs Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 Where else is it stored and can it be easily viewed/checked?
AnniesSS Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 One of my ex's turned back the clock on his duelly when he was trying to sell it. Ended up selling it to a friend of ours at the time. She brought the truck to the dealership to have some work done on it and a red flag went up.... she ended up not being able to drive the truck for months, the dealership almost got revoked from GM and the Fed's got involved. Somehow he talked himself outa it, but ended up paying her back a large check each month to make up for what he did to her. People su(k
MCourson Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 Does this count? It rolled over and then quit working....
bigdogs Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 I think Al Bundy tried that once when trying to win a new Viper...
seadoons Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 We used to have a 1989 suburban - it was under warranty for 5 years (to 1994) and they had to fix the spedometer about 10 times during that period - it would quick working and then the odometer would quit tracking the mileage. In 1995, the warranty was expired and it quick working again, so it hasn't tracked the mileage since. We sold it earlier this year...15 year old truck...and it had 80,412 miles on it! We did tell the person we sold it to about the odometer not working, and I am sure carfax would have a flag up for odometer fraud, but oh well!
