AC malfunctioning?

Hey guys, my AC is acting up and I was hoping you could help. For the past couple of days my AC has been working as normal, blowing air cold as the arctic. However all of a sudden it will stop blowing cold air and turn room temperature. It seems if I mess with the temperature control switch on the AC controls it will kick back on cold and blow cold again for a few minutes then switch back to cool. Any ideas on what is going on? It is almost like the compressor is kicking on and off but it is on "max" with the temp dial all the way on cold all the time.

Thanks,

B.J.

Oh yeah, this is on my 2001 Tahoe.

Wow. It took 170k miles and 10 years before my AC started goin' south. I guess they don't make them like they used to. :jester:

Woyster,

Try your low pressure switch first. Like I said, I just recently went through all this AC crap with my 94' and that was the first thing to go. I'm not as familliar with the NBS but that'd definatly be my first shot. Unplug it and try to jump it with a paper clip. If your compressor comes on, the switch is shot. If not then your compressor is going south on you.

If in fact it is your compressor, make sure you change BOTH the compressor and accumulator. If you don't swap the accumulator you can prematurely destroy your new compressor. I had the first had expirence of this, while my step father had dealership change compressor 3 years ago. 3 years later while I own it, compressor is dead. If you can get to it, change the Orphus filter. I'm not sure where it is on NBS, but on my OBS its behind the passneger side park lamp.

Good luck

I had the same problem on my 01 Z71. Air would blow cold then warm for a few minutes. Took to the dealer and they replaced a "resistor" in the AC system, it referenced a TSB. I'll have to look at the workorder again to find out exactly. luckily still under Warranty...

OUMike: Where is the low pressure switch you reference? Is this the hot/cold switch on the dash?

CJBLKSS: Did you ever find that work order and determine what they did? Do you recall what the TSB was? How much did they charge you to replace the resistor?

Thanks guys. Since the original post it had seemed to be doing it less. But yesterday the A/C didn't kick on and cool until I was almost home. I guess it isn't going to go away so I should look into getting it fixed.

At work Now will check later....It was under Warranty when the Dealer did his fix, but I have noticed on real hot days it does the same thing. Air Cycles on/off between hot and cold and you can hear the compressor click On/Off. So I was going to take it back before Warranty was up, mine's an 01 with 33k

I wish I only had 33K. Mine is an '01 with 81K! So there is definately NO warranty left for me.

If anyone knows what needs to be changed so I can buy the parts and do the work myself that would be great!

This is gonna be on the accumulator. Your truck is newer than mine so I'm not sure where the accumulator is in your truck. But its gonna be a little thing sticking out of the accumulator.

01 hd

did the same thing

They found it. It was the motor that opens the flap from hot to cold. they said it was weak. Kind of like it will go to hot if not energized.

Its under the dash Like a little motor

Hello to all

I'm new around here, I have a problem relative to the A/C too, someone can help me please?

My 04 silverado suddenly stopped to blow air from the vents...I taked it to the dealer and told me that it is the wire harness and some kind of resistor so the good news is that now I know where's the failure, the bad news is that the repair is very expensive (about $400)

Someone knows how or where I can look on how to do this myself? (and to buy the replacement parts for a cheaper price) :)

Thanks, this will help a lot...

due that my skill with the wrenches is not very good :D , I'm a beginner in mechanic!

Knock on wood, I never had the hi-blower resistor blow on my trucks. I did, just this past week, have to adjust my compressor clutch due to the A/C becoming intermittant. I bought a set of clutch tools from MasterCool. It took about 30 seconds to adjust the clutch on the 99 6.0 after I dropped the front plastic deflector (behind the fron valance).

The way I knew it was clutch related was that I had evacuated the system, thinking it was just low on refrigerant, and had put a can in from it's own pressure, then went to jump the low side pressure switch and it wouldn't engage the clutch with the jumper in the connector. I tapped the clutch and it engaged...a sure sign that the gap was worn too large for the electromagnet to pull it in.
