Drive Train Vibration

Recommended Posts

Posted

A few months ago I had a new set of Tires installed and ever since then My S-10 Extreme started having a Drive Train Vibration.

The tires where even replaced with a different set.

My Local Chevy Dealership has been unable to find the cause of the vibration

it's really bad around 55 MPH

It's very uncomfortable to drive....

Any suggestions on what to look for or do?

Thanks,

Are your tires balanced properly ?

I've found most garages in my area don't know how to properly balance a tire. If so check your driveshaft angles this would be the next most likely source of vibration that I would check. hope that helps, good luck :seeya:

Tires have been balanced about 4 times now.

from where I bought the tires and the chevy place.

chevy place has checked Transmission, Drive Shaft, Rear End.

nothing is out of specs.

not likely but your alighnment coulld be severly out of wack. also how well do you trust the techs at your dealership. I had one call to ask my roomate where he kept the key to unlock his lugnuts. (they are factory installed and are under the rear bench next to the jack) why I knew this and a certified ase mechanic didn't is beyond me :seeya: But as for your problem I'm kind of stumped. um oh yeah just wondering what type of tire ,size and does it vibrate over 55mph or just at 55.

my whole cab shakes like a mofo when I hit the brakes at 45 but only at 45.

I know my rotors are warped but I've been procrastinating. sorry I couldn't be more help

The vibration is felt in the seats and the console shakes the side mirros shake.

the steering wheel doesn't shake at all.

I feel like it's in the rear end somewhere....

 I'm still not sure but I've got to get some sleep b4 work tonight.

I'll talk with a guy I work with who used to build hot rods. He's pretty knowlagable when it comes to troubleshooting. let you know tomorrow. cya :seeya:

This is a known issue on the later model S-10/Sonomas with the extended cab and the Zq8 suspension. I

s your Xtreme an extended cab model?

There was a detailed thread somewhere on www.s10forum.com about this, and I believe the issue was the hop shock was not tightened down, or it had to be replaced, or installed if for some reason it was not on there from the factory.

Let me know if it is an extended cab model. I'll try to find that thread and see what the resolution was.

Have you lowered the truck at all? I could see if you did anything like that you would be changing pinion angles which can deffinetly cause driveline vibrations. You could try to take your driveshaft out an d rotate it 180* and see if that helps. Your dealership has tested the torque converter too right? Check the engine mounts, transmission mounts and all suspension components. Let us know what you find.

It is an Extended Cab S10-Extreme

comes from the factory lowered.

just strange that I've never had this problem for the first 50K miles

but since I put new tires on it I have.

The Chevy place says they checked everything.

They have again this week, they seem to think it's a Tire or Rim

Hope you get it fixed soon. Just put 56k on my ride and have had nothing but smooth operationg out my truck. Let us know if you get it fixed and what it wasy :)

thanks, for all of the responses

According to the Chevy place it's the TIRES, 2 of them are way out

of road force variation

I will never buy tires from JUST TIRES again...

...now I have to go argue with them...

Thanks again

Wow, this sounds real familiar. I have a '98 Chevy Blazer.

I had four tires replaced about three months ago and

got a wheel alignment at the same time.

It would give a little shimmy around 75-80 MPH. It

is kind of hard to give that complaint to the tire

dealer. Anyway, my tires got progressively more

noisy. And, the inside of the front right showed

excessive wear.

I went back and they found my Blazer to be out

of alignment (that's weird, they just aligned it

three months ago). They realigned it

and rotated my tires. They mentioned that the

idler arm had some play but they don't stock

the replacement part because it was only a

tire dealer.

Anyway, the noise continues. It is almost

unbearable. I tried to pin the noise down to

a particular tire by changing with the spare

one tire at a time. The noise never went

away. Apparently, it is more than one

tire making the noise. By the way, the tires

are Bridgestones.

But, as I was changing the fronts, I noticed

a LOT of play. I could probably move the

jacked up wheel left and right by at least

one degree in each direction. The tolerance

is one degree; I've got at least two degrees

of play. The play has got to be out of tolerance.

So, I've got an appointment with a Chevy

dealer on Thursday to get the play out.

Hopefully, I'll start to see some improvement.

We'll see.

Good idea on the driveshaft check - it's quick. Just need to take out the 4 bolts front and 4 bolts rear to drop it out and check the joints. If they do not pivot smoothly, you will get a mean vibration that you can feel even just backing out of the driveway.

My girlfriend has a 98 2WD Jimmy and it has a bad roar in the front. Tire store says it is the hub bearings and they want $800 to do both sides. They showed her excessive play. You might have bad bearings also. She has had some vibrations when braking heavily also.
