So dove season is about to start up in the North and Central zones in Texas,September 1 to be exact.

Anyone else into bird hunting? If so,post any tips/tricks/techniques you may have for others to use and also relay hopes and past success stories.

Dove season opens the 6th in NC I think, although I could be wrong.

The only tip I have is it makes a difference in the type of ammunition you buy. I myself use Fiocchi High Velocity 12 Ga 3" Magnums. I can get a dove from half a mile away :seeya:

doves them cute little birds put on this earth to make me look like i'm blind. But they don't have anything on ducks. hope the intent isn't as bad as the doing. imagine group of very decent rabbit hunter walking up on your farm pond to see a million ducks (maybe not but a pond full). some says we could have duck for thanksgiving. some jumps the ducks, then World war 3 starts up, well it sounded like. we should've just invited them to dinner, not a duck got hit. of course we had proper premits and stuff for ducks.

squirell season starts aug 28 here, thinking I'll take the wife. they say the mast this year isn't going to be good, so if we don't kill quite a bit a lot will starve. I normally mostly hunt cotton tails with a measure of deer and squirel tossed in.

I normally hunt the remington nitro mag shells in 3" in 4 shot. Been wanting to try 5 shoot.

Dove season starts on August 25 here. Bow season also starts around that time. I also head to Arkansas to duck hunt in the winter. Then we hunt turkey in the spring.

turkey is one thing I never have gotten the hang of..

I have a bennelli with an extended magazine, holds nine shots :) , and when we go pheasant hunting, it takes about all nine shots to get a cock down (I wonder how many people will snicker at shooting a "male" pheasant)

Man, I took my hunter safety course (mandatory in Washington) last year and I'm dying to try out any type of bird hunting, but none of my friends hunt.

So sorry Frank, I don't have any recommendations...just a jealous jones.

Don't hunt in GA with that gun. It is illegal to not use a plug.

ToeJam, you really need to find someone to hunt with. I recommend bird hunting before deer. Hunting birds give you more action, than deer.

My old man has been trying to get me to go hunting with him for years now. One of these days I'll take him up on the offer But I need a gun first  I think the best spot I know is the parking lot where I work. I see at least 3 or 4 does a week always around dawn. I've gotten pretty close to em too. they're pretty accustomed to people being around so they just go about their buisness without a care in the world. haven't seen any bucks around though :D I think they know better

good hunting guys :D

you can shoot pheasant without the plug in NC, but not dove or duck. In NC you can run a deer with dogs, and take them down with "buck" shot or slugs. It's quite exhilerating.

I like spring gobbler season here in WV. That's about all the bird hunting there is around here aside from an occasional grouse taken during squirrel or rabbit season. We have a fall turkey season too but it gets overshadowed by the overlapping deer season(s).

thanks always wandered if that elderly gentemen was talking straight.

my beagle's daddy, well the old man swore, came out GA as a deer dog. i know when i took rascal and his sibling out hunting they'd leave a rabbit in site for a deer trail that was fresh. All ways wanted to try to hunt that way, but he's an old dog now and his family is all gone on. his children are not trained enouph to control in a strange place. maybe I'll get another good pack together someday.

Dove season starts here on Sept 1st as well. Doubt I will go out, but I have plenty of shells and my hunting license should I change my mind. Never really liked the taste of dove, so not much point in going.

Now when pheasant/quail and deer season roll around you can guarantee I will be out in the fields. Wouldn't mind hunting turkeys this fall either. They are really thick around here, and the farmer I used to work for hates having them around and wants a few eliminated. lol

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
