Transfer Case Fluid ?

Hey Guys - I have a quick question - I think I have the 243 transfer case. (2500HD with 6.0L) - Push button 2HI - 4HI - 4LO - I changed the fluid this weekend - thinking I should use the autotrak II fluid - because it is push button...but - Now Im not sure. The fluid that came out was red in color - the Autotrk II was blue.

Is that the right fluid for my Transfer Case ?

After doing some reading - a "true" Autotrak transfer case is on the Light dutys.....where the have the round "auto" button.

Do you think using Auto track II fluid is bad ? 0r should I be using regular or synthetic Dexron III ATF.

I can tell you that you paid more for the t-case change than was necessary as the Autotrack fluid wasn't necessary, can only be purchased at GM dealers and is expensive...I've got a 2500LD and that's the fluid to use for my truck as it's got AUTO-2HI-4HI-4LOW...it's the AUTO that requires the Autotrack fluid.

 

As to whether it will mess up your t-case, I'll defer that to someone who would know for sure....

Thw blue Autotrac fluid is GM's synthetic fluid. The dealers put it in any transfer case that has a noise complaint and it usually fixes it. It is safe and highly recomended in all transfer cases. Costs only a little more than Synthetic ATF which would be my second choice, still you only need 2 qts, so the cost isn't that bad!

As for the price....I bought the fliud really cheap. 8 quarts for 15 bucks at one of our local swap meets - bottles were brand new - never opened.

 

It must be from flat rate mechanics - who charge people for it - then bring it home with them when they dont use it.

 

Now - should I run it for a few miles - then 'flush and fill' her because it had the 'red' fluid in it before ??

I did a fill/drain/fill on my 99 because it came with the red originally. The blue juice was also listed as a possible solution to driveline clunk problems. I'd do a quick drain and re-fill.

I agree, a flush and refill can't hurt, especially since you got 8 qts cheap!

What is the difference between AutoTrac fluid and other synthetic Dexron III from Mobil, Amsoil or others?
