Ram air?

Just finished installing the K&N FIPK for my burb this afternoon. It felt a little more responsive and the sound ain't bad either :(

The whole process revealed something interesting. The supporting plate that used to hold the airbox is now in between the filter element and the ground.... I bet if I remove it, there would be a lot more air :) Problem is will I get too much dirt and water to the filter element? What do you think?

Better yet, I can make something that would guide the air from the ground to the filter. May be something like the Volant cold air intake that was mentioned here the other day. Any recommendation?

The shroud or metal plate that the K&N mounts on does a great job isolating the filter from the heat of the engine.  After you've been driving for awhile you can open the hood and actually feel the difference in air temp in the filter compartment compared to the engine compartment.  So, the cool air is getting in there somehow....

Thanks guys.

Jon, the job looks quite doable but unfortunately, I know myself enough to see it's gonna take me much longer than others to get this done  I'm not good with pipes either :(

Shaners,

Don't know about your vehicle, but in my burb, the plate is on the outside of the distance between the filter element and the engine. It for sure does not help shield radiated heat xfer from the engine. For convection heat xfer, it does not look like the hot air from the eingine could travel across enough and upward to get to it either. If it does, most of it would go throught the big gap between the plate and the K&N-provided heat shield (may be this gap differs from model to model). And the plate for sure could not help that. I made a gamble this afternoon and took it off :) After at 30 mile trip. I stopped and checked... the air region by the element is still cool, but don't know if it helped much... I'll keep my fingers crossed :D
