Took my truck in....

Recommended Posts

Well, I finally took her in for the recalls and TSB's.  2 of the recalls dealt with the front brakes and the 1 recall was something with the drivers seat belt.  Here are the 4 TSB's that I turned in with my truck.

Steering Stem (again!)

Driveshaft

Computer Flash

Driveline Vibration

I'll keep you guys updated.....I hope the dealer doesnt give me the "Could not reproduce problem".  Does anyone else out there printout the TSB's and take them in to the service advisor?  I did this and the service advisor was surprised I had this info....

I print out all of the TSB's or at least the number for them.  When I show them to the dealer they give me one of those "Where did you get these looks," It's almost like you have to hold there hand through the whole thing.  I've got to find a better dealer in the area to take my truck into.

Yep, I hear you on that.  My local dealer can be very rough at times to deal with.  They already called me and said "If the problem does not show up during our test drive, we cant fix it under warranty"  I was like, "trust me, I've been driving this truck for 8 months now...ALL of those problems DO exist".  I better not get that phone call today after the test drive "Um, sir, we could not reproduce your problem..."  If I do, have pitty on my service advisor because I'm going to open up a can of whoop a** on him...J/K....  :(

I've got to get a photo for you guys of my dealers "fix-it" job on one of my grease fitting boots.  The thing was ready to fall off so I took it in assuming they were going to replace it.  When I got home I looked at it and what do I see, a zip tie on it, and not even on the side I was concerned about.  Incompetence, if the fix was that easy I would have done it myself.  If I was the one who noticed the problem you think that they would know that the didn't fix it correctly.  I should just pump it up to the correct amount of grease because I know that the thing will blow w/ a little pressure on it and there little zip tie won't help at all.  What's the point of a warranty if they don't even fix what's wrong w/ the truck.  That's why I cancelled my extended warranty, I don't want to pay for horrible service, I'd be better off doing it myself or taking it to a real mechanic.

Z71 Guy,

If they tell you they couldn't duplicate, request that one of the technicians go for a ride with you.  That way you can maybe duplicate the the problem for them.  I've done this a couple times with good results.

Good luck.

I always ride with the shop foreman.  The one time i didnt (brake squeak) they said COULD NOT DUPLICATE (guy was lazy) well he was driving my truck out of the shop and the foreman heard the squeak. Immediatly had the truck back in the bay.

Ill be taking mine in soon :(  for the nickel plated slip yoke thing

I took my truck in for a whistle in the steering.

They could not reproduce the problem.

I took my truck in for a whistle in the steering, I also took in a copy of the TSB that says "steering gear whistle - replace rack & pinion assembly".

The dealer replaced a bushing and said that it was chewed up.

My best friend has the same truck & had the same problem.  He took it in to my dealer who said "we cannot replicate the problem", I went with him to pick it up.  When the service manager saw me he told my buddy. "Bring it back in Wednesday, I'll have the new rack & pinion by then".

Well guys, I've got some good news.  I got my truck back today and they did everything that I had listed.  I'm surprised how much easier my truck is to steer now (and the clunk feeling is gone).  The nickle plated driveshaft thing is back ordered, so I should get a card when they get it in.  I also had them reprogram my computer and reset my driveline computer.  That also made a huge difference.  Overall, I am extremely happy with my service.  They will be getting a positive letter from me.

Glad to hear they hooked you up.

You bring up a good point.  A positive letter.  Many people complain and send in bad comments, including me, when they have a bad dealer visit.  How many give praise when the have a good visit.  I do.  I think things like that matter in the long run.  Just like the bad comment trickle back to the dealer that they are messing up, the good comments get back to them that they are doing a good job.  :(

I tried to get the nickel-plated slip yoke but was also told they were backordered.  I followed someone's idea from another pickuptruck.com and removed the driveshaft and greased the splines inside the yoke...voila no more clunk and bump when I start and stop.  That was driving me crazy.  Truck sounds alot better.  Sometimes I still feel the bump slightly but barely noticeable.  It's been a few days and so far so good.  Some of the guys on that thread said it had been several months since they greased the splines and the noise never cam back.

I may just forget about the new yoke and just grease it every six months or so.  I don't mind the extra work and don't like to have it worked on in a shop by a stranger unless it's absolutely needed.  A buddy told me there are aftermarket slip yokes available with a grease zerk (which would eliminate removal of the driveshaft) but I haven't seen one anywhere.

Anyway-it took a half hour to do and made a lot of difference.  Just my 2 cents. ;)

Hey:  What's this about the nickel plated slip yoke?

is it a 4WD thing maybe?

Yes it's just occurs with 4wd 1500s.  The clunk comes from play in the slip yoke splines where the yoke fits into the back of the transfer case.  No damage occurs but the noise is just bothersome.  I guess the nickel plating on the new yoke eliminates binding between the splines and tranfer case.

I don't know if putting a zerk i the existing yoke is viable.  Sounds like a good idea though.  Would be nice not to have to remove the shaft to grease it.  I had a 1993 Dakota 4wd and the slip yoke on that truck had a grease fitting.
