Please Help...04 Envoy

Coming home last saturday night, the whole truck electrical system just faded off and quit. Just as I was pulling off of the road, it turned back on and contiued to operate correctly. But then it did it again and again. Each time the amp gauge would fall to about 10 volts before everything went black. The lights would dim before going off as well. I drove to the first small street I could pull off of because I did not want to let it sit on the roadside without hazard lights. It seemed like someone pulled the key out of the ignition and did this about twleve times in a matter of 2 miles. I finally had it towed to the dealer, but they cannot find anything wrong. Please help, I do not want this to happen to my wife with children in the car.

The ignition switch went bad on my 2002 Envoy last week and the car had to be towed to the dealer. The switch defect was intermittent at first but finally failed completely. The dealer mentiond that they have replaced over 25 Trailblazer and Envoy ignitions switches in the last six months. He suspects that GM will have a recall on the ingnition switch in the near future when a new design is available  .

We took it to the dealer and they could not get it to act up. They kept it for 2 days and would not give us a rental because GM will not pay for the rental unless they determine the problem. Anyway, we get the Envoy back and three days later it acts up again. Same thing, except my wife was all alone. She called me on her cell and I drove out to a gas station to meet her. The funny thing is the thing drives, just keeps cutting out and turning right back on. Now I am getting upset and I had it towed back to the same dealer. They cannot get it to act up but are being very nice. The GM relations guy finally gave us a rental, but they still have our Envoy. I really hope they can figure out what is going on.

Just bought a 2004 Envoy with 14000 on it and had the same problem, got it to repeat many times and was worse with more electrical load applied. Took to dealer and got problem to repeat, Dealer reprogramed the PCM and have not had same problem since.

My new problem is with the turn signal when turned on after a short while it will lock up till it is turned off and back on , then lock up again after a few cycles.

All it sounds like is your alternator, or your battery cables are loose, or the connection on the back of the alternator is loose, causing a short loss of amps.

It sounds like a bad ignition switch - I've seen a bunch with different concerns and problems, and at least 2 with your exact description.

With it being intermittent, it will be hard to get the dealer to cover the cost, but maybe you can get them to check the ignition switch function. There is a bulletin out describing different diagnostic tests and what else may be done.

I would say just have them replace the ignition switch at your cost, but it's not too cheap, and I'd hate to say that I cost you the money.

My bet still lies with the ignition switch, though.

Hope this helps.

Interesting. I just had this start happening on my '04 Envoy recently. I don't have any of the other electrical problems (yet), but this one is a bit annoying. I am planning to go to the dealer on Friday and have this (along with some other things) looked at. Will let everyone know what they say.

I had the lockup on my Bravada and the dealer fixed it with a PCM flash.

The same thing is happening to me in my 04 envoy. It has happened 4 times and the dealer is playing hard ball. I am using the Hawaii lemon law to get me a new vehicle. Mine stalled with my kids inside going down the road. It won;t start and you have to get it towed to the dealer. This is unaccepatable for a new vehicle. I say go thru the lemon law in your state and address this issue. If we don;t all band together GMC will continue to overlook this issue.

I too have had the dimming on our 2004 Trailblazer, and it has been intermittent. I was asked by my advisor to check the battery connections & the ground connections in the engine bay. Hasn't done it, but I suspect that was not the solution either. My wife is pretty upset!

Can anyone post the Bulletins for the ignition switch or for re-programming the PCM? That way I can show my advisor info to support the problem, and hopefully get to the bottom of this.

Thanks, Dave

We had my bosses truck in the shop recently, headlamps flicker or go out totally. took a while to find, but it ended up needing the main fuse block under the hood. It was corroded and somewhat loose. Thats where my money is at. Ignition switches, when they go bad just go bad.
