Exhaust - Please Help!!

 I recently put on a Flowmaster 40 daul exhaust on my new 2004 5.3L Z71 Sierra. I'm very very very unhappy with the results, the noise in the cabin is absolutely obnoxius! The resononece is actually buzzing in my left ear after I get out of the truck, I think I may even smash the 40 with a sledge!!!

Originally, I was going to go with the Gibson SS Dual Sport, but I jumped the gun & had the Flowmasters put on, it was one of those impulse buys. Now, I can't wait to rip them off the truck!

Now I'm thinking about going with the Gibson, SS Dual Sport, model 65300, does anyone else out there have them on a 5.3L GM? How do they sound, is the noise acceptable in the cabin? A littel rumble is nice, but the Flowmaster absolutely suck!!!!! I want it to be loud at the exhaust, not in the cab.. Should I go with Borla or someone else???

Gibson says the noise is at the exhasut tip where it should be, but is that really true?

Anyone out there with any expierence with this, pleas advise!

Much appreciated!

I have Gibson Duals, catback system, forget exactly which one; though it is for my 2500HD 6.0 Liter. I have a decent amount of cabin resonance, but it is not enough to bother me, it does bother my Mom when she rides with me, but I have had no one else complain.

Do you have the duals out the side? or out the back? Also, is the reonance really loud when you go from 1st to 2nd? or is it just a nice rumble?

Would you buy Gibson again?

Sorry to hear about your luck, but you put the wrong flowmaster on your truck for what you wanted. A FM70 would have been what you wanted.

I got a FM50SUV and only hear it under acceleration or when I put my foot in it to get on down the road. At cruising speeds it cannot be heard over the radio at normal decible level.

good luck...

I have the Gibson duals out back, and I really only hear it when I get on it. No drone or resonance at all. I actually wish it was a little louder...but it does have a nice low tone to it.

I have the borla on my HD and there is NO interior drone or resonance at all. In my opinion if you have a exsb then the SLP cat back kit is the best.

Dave here, I HAVE the same problem. My '93 has the factory duals with the great sound. I put the same flowmaster system with duals that exit out the right side on my 2003 and the truck vibrates so loud, I am sorry I did it. I was thinking of getting another system, but at what cost AGAIN.

I wish I had gotten the Borla.....

Well I put a Dynomax cat back system on my '93 Jeep XJ, and the fit and finish was excellent. Very little excess noise while cruising, and really good seat of the pants performance enhancement (could also be the cored out cat) So I decided to "upgarde" the exhaust on my '99 Jeep WJ, I really wanted a Borla but it was 2-1/2 times the cost of the Dynomax and besides the Dynomax on the '93 XJ was really a good fit, finish and sound.

Wow what a mistake! the Dynomax on the '99 will drive you nuts with the droning on long trips (use to pull a travel trailer 14 hours one way a few times a year) and I'm telling you it almost puy me in the looney bin. Whats also funny is that the sound will change with my driving position! Well one good thing about that sound is that it muffled the crapy whinning from the Dana rear axle (can you say 4 rebuilds and still there). Well the Dyno max has rusted / burnt a hole through the neck (weld @ the inlet) While it has a "life time" warranty i'm not going to pursue it, I'm replacing the muffler with a "stock" muffler as the WJ is on the short list to be replaced (and not soon enough)

Now basically what it boils down to is you get what you pay for and you have to decide what you want in looks and SOUND. Borla is all stainless steel (a good quality SS) and they do extensive testing for that Boral sound, They also test the muffler on the various vehicles to "engineer" the sound and keep out the droning. But you will spend more $. Gibson quality is also good, A friend has it on his OBS silverado but it's to noisy (he loves it though). The Dyonmax I installed was aluminized steel with a stainless tip, Less costly material and less engineering on the intended vehicle.

I'm sitting on the fence on deciding about installing a cat back exhaust on the Yukon As this is also my tow vehicle and long trip vehicle. Droning in it may put me over the edge.

My own adivice on this one I'm trying to follow is find someone with you vehicle and with the exhaust you want, drive it and listen.

Thanks man, I appreciate it, when you get on it, does the cab vibrate or is just a nice hum of the exhaust? Also, do you have the stainless or the aluminumized?

Thanks!

John

It doesn't vibrate, just a low rumble. I went with the stainless and it has been on the truck for 3 years so far. The pipes still look good, and the muffler appears to be holding together, but I do see some rust around the edges. I felt a performance increase upon installation, but then again as soon as I installed it I always had my foot in it to hear it.

First, Why don't you learn how to type and quite possibly read the english language. It might be a good start for ya.

Second, He was making an opinion based on what he put on the truck. He obviously is aware he should have done something different. we all learn from mistakes... or are you perfect?

Third, he wasn't bad mouthing anything... It likely does suck based off of what he has described and what he had hoped the result would be. I don't think he was bad mouthing the company or product.

Quit being an ass and try and provide some constructive criticism.

Nice, nice, wat i mispell., lol yall or the. haha. I know it was opinion but u have to understand when you go get a exhaust job they normally ask you how loud do you want it and they match the muffler to what you tell them. And i wasnt necessarily talking about him badmouthing flows. but that should have been on another post. So i can just tell that i cant give .02 cents on what i thought bout his situation.

Also bet that truck sounds just good as it is with the 40 series. And that me bein an ass. So my constructive criticism is why get an exhaust job when you dont even like it being loud cause thats all ya basically doin.

Oh and i am perfect.lol.

When I was at the Los Angeles Car Show, at the vendors section, there was a Flowmaster booth there. I asked the FM rep what muffler they have that would work on an '04 Silverado with a 6.0 engine that won't make my ears bleed.

The Flowmaster dude said that the 70 series with a resonator on the left exhuast pipe before the muffler would eliminate any resonance and keep my ears from bleeding.

I've gone with the FloPro on my truck, and wish it had more rumble when got on it, but I'm not going to spend any more money on my exhaust system, (I'm saving up for a 2500HD with the LBZ).

I just though I'd pass this info on. Hope you find what you're looking for.
