Wont Start

I have a 99 Serria 5.3 engine, I turn the key and the starter just clicks. I've tried jumping it and still just clicks. The battery posts are clean but I cleaned them again anyway. I've removed the starter and had it checked, it checks good. I have 12 volts to the small starter wire without turning the key to start, is this right? What have I missed checking?

Anyother thing to look for? This just happened out of the blue with no warning. Almost like a connection came loose. All the interior stuff works fine and the headlights will light up fine. Of course it had to happen 8 miles away from home.

Thanks,

I've seen worn contacts in the ignition switch cause a similar problem, although it really does sound like the contacts in the starter solenoid are worn. I would perform a starter current draw test, but you need a good ammeter, preferably with an inductive pickup.

I just got back from working on it again. I have 12 volts to the big post and 12 to the small post when keyed on. However, it still just clicks at the solenoid. Even though I had the starter tested and it passed all tests, could it still be the starter? I hate to replace the starter for $165 and that not be the problem. Auto parts stores generally wont take back an electrical item. I need some advice quick.

Thanks,

Jim

I just had the same problem on my 99 5.3 tried to jump it nothing took the starter out and had it tested it was fine. Took the alternater and battery out and had them tested and it was a bad battery. New Battery from Advanced Auto Parts and truck started right up. I bet its also your battery.

Try to manually jump it at the starter. If that works there is a problem in the ignition system. Dumb question but the motor isn't frozen is it? Also check the voltage at the starter with the key or while being jumped.

I agree with a post above for the weak battery

Turn on the head lights & try to start the truck

With a good strong battery the headlights will barely dim

a weak battery the headlights will almost go out.

good luck

Just installed a new battery, Auto Zone's tester said my battery was bad. I bolted it up and the same thing. Still clicks at the starter, really starting to tick me off. Not sure what to do at this time. Any help? Any more ideas?

Thanks.

Well, if the motor isn't siezed, and you have the correct voltage at the starter, my guess would be that the starter is bad. Try rotating the engine by hand...put a socket on the crank bolt and turn clockwise to make sure that a siezed engine isn't the problem.

Thanks to everyone for responding. It turned out my starter was bad. Auto Zone gave me incorrect information. I went back and removed the starter, jumped it and it didnt work right so I took it to NAPA. It didnt pass the starter test. I replaced it and my truck starts great. Bottom line is, the Auto Zone in Stillwater Oklahoma needs work either training their employees or their equipment. Maybe I should have been more attentive, but most of my buying parts at auto store's has been positive. Again, thanks to all.

don't be to hard on them parts guys. you got the best free advice from someone making $7.00 a hour that probably didn't know what a spark plug was until he hired on. :banghead: How can you lose? :loser:

And how old was the battery anyway...? If after a few years, it would't be much of a loss anyway. Now the vehicle's a bit more reliable..

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
