Brake life

The font brakes on my 02 2500HD have started to squeal, with only 35K on them (only 600-800 of that has been towing). I can't believe they're that sh@tty, and need to be swapped already. How long have you been getting on a set of brakes?

65K for me and counting. I just looked at the pads last time I rotated and it appears that I still have about 50% left! The only little problem I have is a slight pulsation on hard braking, but that doesn't happen to often.

I am 82,000 mile plus on my factory brake pads. Still have pad left, but I am considering at least doing the front brakes soon. I have a little bit of brake pulsation as well, but it varies as stated by Freyguy. I do a lot of highway driving along with a decent amount of city mixed in...

I only have 30,000 miles on my HD and they look new. On my previous truck(99 Silverado) it had 80,000 when I traded it in and it passed for a GM certified vehicle(at least 50% wear left on the brake pads). I was very impressed the life of the OEM pads. Only time will tell if I am as fortunate with the HD brakes.

Replaced the front at 85k. Still had about 20-25% left but opted to change out the pads while having to turning the rotors to eliminate pulsation.

 

Go ahead and dont waste ypur money and time turning the rotors, just replace them. Mine lasted about 3-5k and pulsation was back. Today's metal isn't yesterdays metal.

 

I just replaced my rears at 95k. probably had 25-30 of life left in them.

JD is right, my rotors were junk from 28,000 miles. Pads were harder than the rotors, what a mess, not to mention warped. Just change them out , 2 hours of time and about $250.00 ,or go the steeler route and have them bang you hard. Have a little confidence go buy some Power Slots and some good pads like Bendix. Have fun, and happy braking.

I'm at 65k and they're still just fine. No pulsing, pulling, or squeaking. And although the boat (6k lbs) isn't around anymore, I still haul my quads around all the time.

 

Well, that's the 02 anyway. The 92 has had many sets of pads, and it's on it's second set of rotors (160k miles).

Had to replace rear pads at 36K. Now at 55K and will be replacing the fronts soon. I do tow alot but the trailer has brakes and I usually keep the controleer a little high to keep wear down on the truck. I think the OEM brakes stink. I also have pulsation under heavy braking.

Brake life is like gas mileage. It depends on where you drive and how you drive. Without telling us what sort of driving you do (aggressive, slow, towing, etc) and where you drive (flat interstate, rolling hills, city, etc), 35K sounds like a reasonable number, as does 80K.

I agree with previous post that break life depends on driving conditions. When I lived in New York City breaks and ball joints lasted only 30K. Now that I am in the country with mostly high way driving 60,000 plus is the norm.

Have the proportioning valve checked to make sure the back brakes are working also. Ever once in a while I have a customer who goes through front brakes really fast and it turns out to be that.

True, but in my case 35K is less then half of what it should be. I drive pretty conservatively, mostly on highways (very little around town) and have only towed about 600-800 miles. Anything less then 75K and I'll be
