Purchasing a New "to me" Truck

I have called and talked with two dealerships about two prospective trucks....

 

How do I go after their bottom dollar. As my post mentions below I am looking at Crew Cabs.

 

I have a Short Bed and a long bed that I am looking at.

 

The Long Bed is a 2002 with 25000 miles sticker price 31,235 LS Model Cloth Loaded

 

The Short Bed is a 2003 with 40,325 mlies with a sticker price of 35,400 LT Leather Loaded

 

What would you offer on the trucks. I am looking to have 15,000 cash in hand when I go to the dealer.... Is there any way I could get the 03 down to 30,000?

 

Any Suggestions/Secrets :lol:

Is the 03 a Dmax. If it is it sound about right. My 03 is the same truck(GMC) and it has 30000 in it. It retails for $37,450. It is an SLT fully loaded. The problem with these trucks is that they can sell them for what they want. I would try it at 30K with 15K down. All they can do is say no. That sounds like a good start. This truck has an LB7 and the new ones have an LLY. Most people want the extra torque so use this as leverage. I have a friend who made a hell of a deal on a 99 with a 5.3 because the 00 and up had 15 more horses. We drove all of them and the 99 was the strongest running. Just ratings but the dealers dont know that. They just think higher means they can jack up the price. Besides a programmer will give you the "juice" you need.

Are those D-Max trucks? I recently bought an 02 2500HD CCSB 4x4 with the 6.0l, auto and LT package for $25,100. 28k miles, Line-x installed and basically like new. I think the asking price was $26,900.

Yes they are both DMAX/ALLI 4x4 Crew Cabs Trucks....

 

The 2002 Is NOT loaded with leather Long Bed....

 

The 2003 is loaded with leather Short Bed... I told him that I wanted 15,000 down and a 15,000 note or I wasnt going to make the drive. He said that he would have to see my truck first.

 

The quote above about selling for what they want is true.... I know in the back of that sales managers mind he is saying "Someone will pay retail"....

 

Anyone have some simillar trucks

Above you said you'd have 15k cash in hand. now it looks like you are trying to trade something for 15k. Trading blurrs all the numbers. Would you give me 15k for my vehicle that I appraised at 15k ?

trading is stupid, for lack of a better word, sell it and bring in cash, ive traded in 2 cars and learned my lesson, i could have gotten 5 grand more for one and 7 for the other, bad mistake looking back, and pressure him with threatening to buy a ford with less miles more options etc, always seems to work, i like "well im sorry we cant come to an agreement this leaves me with dodge/ford" their manager would be pissed if they lost a potential sale :lol:

All i can say is don't get your heart set on the truck. Dont let emotion take over. You need to walk away right away when you dont get the deal you want. I have bought many ,many trucks and worked at a dealer befor starting at Summit. The salesmen love to put emotion into it. Dont fall for the old take it home for the night and bring it back. I would not even bring up the 15,000 cash. Get your best deal first then tell them your putting 15,000 down. Other wise they will try to confus the situation with the money. Also take note that dealer like to finance rather than cash deals. They get a kick back from the banks.

Well, what are you trading in? a $15K vehicle or $15K plus trade? I would definately try to trade, the used market is very soft with the rebates on the new ones. Just remember all they can say is no, and remember where you want to end up on the :difference numbers" becuase that's the part your paying.

I agree.....the worst thing in the world is to picture yourself driving it away....if ya don't get what ya want....leave....find something else...somewhere else.....

This is what I do.

 

Pull into the lot...drive over by the truck...... drive past...stop.....backup......drive past. Come back around and stop at it. all this time the stealership guys are drooling.....get out walk over look at the tag on the windshield.....get back in your rig by then a salesman will be there...roll down your window ask'm if he has a pen and paper.....take it write 30,000 and your phone number fold it over and hand it to him while you tell'm thats what you will pay for that truck out the door and that you are headed to a larger town thats close or another dealer (I say larger town) to buy a truck....and drive off.

 

I did this with the last two vehicles I bought.... one being my 01 Lt Dmax CC (every option) that was 7 months old ....I bought it for 28000 out the door. I wrote down 27500 and he called when I was 5 minutes away headed to Spokane to buy a truck and told me 28000 I said I'll think about it and hung up.... after I looked around in Spokane with Gramps we went back and I bought it for 28000.

 

Never let the salesman get a word in edge wise and tell'm what you will pay and walk away...the key is to always let'm know how to get ahold of you :cool:

 

Works for me everytime hope this helps a bit :chevy:

I dont think that would have worked on this truck this time but it would have been worth a try.

Definitely don't be afraid to walk. And avoid the emotional attachment. Obviously as we can see here, there are plenty of trucks out there and available. Do your homework on the net and out on the lots to see what the going prices are. Research the value of what you have to trade. Know what you owe if anything and what you have to put down. Then figure out where you want to be and what your ideal bottom line is. Then it's basically a matter of tossing out a figure and meeting in the middle if they won't go there...obviously if you're going to flex on your initial figure, you want to toss out something you know they won't/can't do.

Nothing scares them like just walking off. My Dad is a master at buying cars, my Mom hates to go with him. He always sits down and plays the numbers game for a bit and then says I want it for x amount. If they say no, he just gets up and starts to walk away. If you have spent some time haggling they will know you want the vehicle, the walking away scares them enough to really consider your offer. Generally they will go with what you say, or really close. Oh and when you come in your first offer has to be somewhat lower than thew one you give before you walk out, then they feel like they have gotten a little out of you. SO if you want a truck for $30k and it is priced at $35k, ask for $28k first. Also have in mind and toss it out that you were looking at another truck across town or something.

    • No I didn’t watch a video of a person who analyzes oil for a living explain general oil usage. For clarity I did ask my brothers one who runs our equipment business. The other who runs our old ROW business about oil usage. Nothing has changed since I retired. Their personal vehicles or work vehicles use no oil. Not enough to see on the oil checking device. Then I pondered. I like to ponder. In this extended oil changing world with oil change countdowns or lights. If engines used say a qt every 2500 miles or up to even 4000 miles. With oil changes reaching as high as 15000 miles. Normal for most people is eight to ten. Vehicles should potentially be seizing up all over the place. Especially in hilly terrain. Just how many people actually check their oil? Maybe 10 percent. Those are the people that probably change their oil early. I like to research used car listings. I have five favorite dealers I check. They all list carfax with their listing. It’s rare to see vehicles with anything but extended oil changes. Transmission service, forget about it. I’ve seen Honda and Toyota certified vehicles up to 100K miles and ten years old. With nothing but normal maintenance. Isn’t nice we all have different experiences and believe our way is the best. You certainly get backup for whatever you believe. Life would be boring otherwise.
    • Interesting rumor. Dealers near me have been tight-lipped so far, but if this reveal actually happens next week, I'm really hoping they finally give the HD a proper interior overhaul. The competition has been eating their lunch in the cabin department for a while now.
    • There are a few good takeaways in that video that pertain to this thread, certainly the possibility of the oil control rings having buildup, the fuel injectors and how clean or not that they are ending up affecting the pistons rings carbon buildup, and the fact that its normal up to a point for a given engine to use some oil, and that the oil quality that is being utilized is part of that ring clogging up issue as well.   I was talking with a neighbor yesterday who has a baby LZ0 duramax and he had bought it slightly used but it does consume some oil and he has switched over to 5W-30 Euro spec oil and in this case that never made a difference in consumption over the factory 0W-20 recommendation. He finds it uses a quart in about 3500 miles and as he goes a ways over that distance he adds oil to full and goes another 1000 miles or so and then changes oil and is typically at 40% or so left on the oil monitor at that point with his use case of quite a lot of highway miles and more limited in short run use. I don't know what other LZ0 engines are doing for oil consumption but that is what his is doing.

    • Ok well I guess Lake disagrees with me on a few points. I call oil consumption pretty basic. Rudimentary. He calls it "really complicated." I think 1qt consumed in 3k miles is a lot. He says that's normal. In 22 minutes, he'll use his natural talent to explain oil consumption to anyone watching this video. He covers everything from obvious engine damage to how normally functioning healthy engines consume oil by design. Lake explicitly states how you drive will impact oil consumption.   Shut up and watch:
