How long before the first oil change?

A buddy of mine said I should change the first one at 1k to clean out all the initial break-in particles. I'm thinking I might go Mobil-1 starting at the first change, but is 1k long enough for it to wear properly? I don't want to use synthetic too soon

I changed mine at 2795.  No metal shavings if i had to do it over id do the same.

I changed to mobil 1 at 9200 miles.  Id wait a bit maybe the 3rd oil changed then go to mobil 1

If you want to trust Gm, then wait until the light comes on...  My '00 came on about 2800 miles...  my HD has 2600 miles on it and no light yet!!!  But it should come on soon I think...

My wifes Olds ('00) came on at 3700 miles the first time...  The oil had been changed at 3000 but the tech guy never reset the indicator.

my oil change light took 8000+ miles to come on, never trusting that thing again!!  i think you should go ahead and run mobil 1, i dont think it would hurt even right off the showroom floor IMO, but waiting till the second change wouldnt hurt a thing, as long as you are regular it doesnt really matter.

I did mine at 500 (castrol) and again at 1,200 and 3,000 with M1, I was hoping to reduce or eliminate the cold start knock with the synthetic, no go  plan on going with M1 every 3,000 for a wile (20,000+) and maybe settle into letting the light tell me when later

only problem with goung to synthetic so early is it may slightly slow down ring breakin but there is no way it will stop it so your break in may be slightly longer, im my opinion that is a good thing, less heat, finer wear ect.

another reason I did mine at 500 was my truck was built in june I took delivery in october it got 22 miles in the mean time that is a long time for oil to sit collecting moisture without any heating to remove it, that can create acids, not to mention the factory assy. lube, junk, shavings breakin particals ect. get that crap out of there

as far af I have been able to find out they no longer use strait mineral oil for breaking in at the factory so u are not damaging anything by changing early, weather it will help or not is a matter of opinion and circumstance
