Anybody out there from Montana?

Hey everyone. My wife and I are looking to move to Missoula Montana next summer. We were hoping to talk to someone that lives there, lived there or lives near there. We just had a few questions about the area. This may be the wrong place to put this post, so let me know if you think I should put it somewhere else. My dad lives in Wallace Idaho which is about 2 hours away, so we know the area fairly well, but would like to talk to someone that actually lives there.

What do you know about the winter's in missoula?

Probably worse than in eastern Washington, and it can be a real b*tch here sometimes, but for the most part its pretty mild...I went through Missoula last March, seemed pretty cold and snow covered, but the streets were clear. Its Montana though, I'm sure the winters arent easy on ya.,....

My wife's family lives there. We visit often, even this Christmas. The weather is cloudy and cold. If you like to fish and hunt, it's a great place. Missoula also has UofM and a lot of activities, but the weather is cold, did I say that? Go there in the winter and see if you like it.

Gang activity in Missoula? What's the inversion layer?

In the Flathead Valley gangs haven't gotten a foothold yet. It is watched and delt with promtly, so far. In Missoula it is considered in the management stage. As in too late, they are here now let's keep things under control. ( nothing like LA though )

Inversion is an atmospheric condition in which the air temperature rises with increasing altitude, holding surface air down and preventing dispersion of pollutants. In other words, all the smoke ( and every thing else in the air ) from wood stoves stays in the valley, once in a while. But I believe that might have been handled. Check it out and see if wood stoves are allowed in the valley floor still. ( call a realtor ).

I'm from a really big city. Given a choice, I'd move to Missoula ( actually, outside of town ) before moving back into a big city. Around here ( MT small towns ) so far, we are outside the scope of really dangerous nuts.

Not trying to discourage you though. There are many factors in making a move. I personally would leave a major city and go to Missoula. But better yet is Flathead Valley. You might have a job waiting for you though. That makes a big difference. So many things to consider?!

oh, one more thing. Like the other guy said, sometimes it gets COLD. If you are moving from, say, San Diego, just get prepared. You can do it though. The trade off's are millions of people all around you or some space and less people in the whole state than in one suburb.

Thanks for all of your help Major. I will have to look into these two situations a little further. By the way, I'm from Northern CA in the foothills. It can get cold up here, but I'm sure its not as cold as Missoula.

But don't get discouraged. The best thing to do is go there for a while. The info about gangs is from a relative ( cop ). I don't mean to sound like it's all bad. Overall the people here/there are nice. I usually read the HD forum. I travelled down to Karl Tyler Chevrolet ( in Missoula ) to buy my '04 2500 HD and a '04 4WD Astro. Best deal around. Building is going good and that is a good sign of a healthy community. Property values are rising too. Another good sign. Don't move into a dying area where people are moving out. Overall, in western MT west of the divide ( some areas east of the divide are growing rapidly also ), growth is going nowhere but up. People are moving out of big cities and relocating to places like Missoula and the Flathead Valley. A little south of Missoula are some really nice places. Check out the commute. Again good luck.
