2001 8.1 Burning Oil

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, my 8.1 is buring 3 qrt.s of oil between changes, after a good 30 min trip, you can smell it, oh yeah, intake manifold bolts and manifold itself has done been replace 9,000 miles ago......

If you smell it there's a leak. Look for it.

Valve covers, oil filter adapter, front or rear crank seals, etc. Mine leaks a little from the front seal.

My 01 8.1 goes through 3 qrts between oil changes---always have since new. No leaks. The dealer says it's normal. :dupe:

Yea, my buddy who is a service manager at GM dealership says the 8.1's do burn some oil. He recommends I check often. I go through about 2 Qt's between oil changes. I change oil every 5k, even if engine monitor says I'm good to go...

Man I am lucky to burn 1 qt in 5000 miles.  Isn't there a fix for this?  I read something on here about a new something to keep the 8.1 from burning oil.

New ring pack---change pistons too so you don't have that nice Diesel-like rap at startup.

What kind of oil are you running?

The last 2 oil changes its been Castrol GTX 10W-30

i tried 5w-30 before that, no diffrence...

What i dont understand is when your burning oil out the exaust pipe, you should lose alot of power, i havent, ive got alot of power! Just dont understand..........

Nope I have a very small amount of piston slap at startup....could be the real deal....could be a cold engine starting for the first time of the day. Reguardless it goes away after about a min of running. So I'm not really concerned about it.

The fix I was thinking about was the upgraded PCV valve.

tmf6902:  How many miles on your 8.1?

I've just turned 10k on mine and don't hear any piston slap *knocks on wood*

My 8.1 has almost 12K with no slap. It

does use a qt. between changes more

if I'm towing.

I went thru that on mine, their is no pcv valve on an 8.1, at least thats what 3 dealers told me, i can't find it either.....

I switched to M1 5W40 SUV blend and my consumption has seemed to lessen over the last 4K miles

This is not a scientific observation, I just don't seem to have to add oil as often

I just got the Helms 2001 CK5 service manual 5 volume set for Christmas, obviously, this is coolness. :smash: I'm learning all kinds of good stuff scanning through them.

Here's what it has to say about the PCV system on the 8.1:

"Crankcase Ventilation System Description

The crankcase ventilation system has no serviceable components so routine maintenance of the system is not required.

A closed crankcase ventilation system is used in order to provide a more complete scavenging of crankcase vapors. The air cleaner supplies the fresh air through a filter to the crankcase. The crankcase mixes the fresh air blow-by gasses. This mixture then passes through a pipe/passage located in the intake manifold."

Don't get to hung up on the part about the air cleaner supplying fresh air through a filter to the crankcase, there isn't a separate filter for the PCV system, that is refering to the engine air filter inside the air cleaner box.

I must be lucky, my 2001 8.1 @ 55K dosen't burn excessive oil or have any piston noise at start up.
