Moble 1 Synthetic

Hi all and Happy New year

16000 klm's/420 hours and I just put in some, well Lube City did but anyway I just put in some Synthetic. Went with the Mobile 1 5/30, seems to be the fluid of choice around here.............. :)

While I was sitting in my truck watching the .........ah, I call them "Oil Techs" I saw this one Oil Tech dump a small bottle of fluid into an area on the driver side near the front, he leaves and gets another small bottle and dumps a small amount into the same area.

I was able to read the lettering "Power Steering Fluid". I asked the Oil Tech to make sure and he told me the fluid was too low to register.

My truck is one month shy of a year for being on the road. Now I ask, mind you this maybe a stupid question but unless the PS fluid evaporated where did a bottle and a bit of fluid go? Has to be leaking from somewhere. Last oil change PS fluid was fine, so in approx. 3 months the truck disposed of 8 to 10 oz of PS fluid.

Any thoughts or similarities

:)

In 2003 GM switched to a system that uses the power steering pump to provide pressure for the brakes...It's called Hydroboost. Now, how that correllates into loss of fluid is beyond me. My 1999 NBS rolled 160,000 miles over 5-6 years and NEVER lost a drop. You have me wondering about my '04.

I have a 2004 2500 crew cab that was loosing steering fluid it was dripping off of the steering cylinder itself. I took it into the dealer to have the rear end serviced and to check the leak. They said they couldn't find anything. I told them I would bring it back in a week to have the transmission flushed. While they were flushing the transmission they finally decided that the steering cylinder was indeed leaking so they replaced it under warrenty. It was dripping off the cylinder down onto the frame just over the tie rod grease fitting. I've got about 11,000 miles on the truck. It never made a puddle on the driveway so I discovered it when I was underneath it changing the oil and greasing it.

When my truck was new from the factory I checked the PS fluid and I had to add it, because there was barely any in there???? Came from the factory that way.

Hydroboost isn't new for 2003, 2500 8-lug and 3500 trucks have had them for years and years. 1500 still don't have the hydroboost in most models.

Much better brakes, but the booster is commonly leaky.

Maybe I should have written, it was reintroduced in 2003. I didn't think GM utilitized Hydroboost on any of the 87-99 OBS or 99-02 NBS Trucks (vehicles with a bed and tailgate)

Had a 1997 SRW K3500 had hydro boost. This was very common on all HD trucks 1/2 tons still use the vaccuum.

Yeah, all Diesel trucks have the hydroboost of course, and there were a few 1/2 ton diesels in the OBS. I have a 95 K3500 SRW with the hydroboost. My brother has a 96 c3500 duallie pickup with 7.4L and hydroboost. I love the way the brakes feel, so much better than my Tahoe with vacuum.

it's common for the any GM vechile to come from the factory LOW on fluids. I've seen it all to often.

My 95 chevy astro has hyroboost. I still like the regular vaccume boost better.

the hydro boost will leak into the vechile if it fails.

Take it to the Dealership and have them check for leaks or at least keep an eye on the fluid level. If the fluid was full at the last LOF and no leaks are present watch the level. If you do not lose any by the next LOF check the level right before you go to the Service center. Did they charge you for the fluids? PS fluid usually comes in 12 oz bottles and if you were 2 bottles low the PS should have been whining pretty loud. The pump has a little whine anyway. Not calling anybody wrong, but it's an old trick to let somebody watch them pour an empty bottle into your vehicle and charge you for it. Some lube centers do the empty bottle thing to make you think they are doing you a good job but don't charge. If it's not leaking and the booster or floorboard isn't filling up, just check your fluids before you go for services.

I will be keeping an eye on the PS fluid and I'll have the Dealership inspect it in January when the truck's yearly is due.

The Oil guy didn't charge me for the fluid and he probably wouldn't have said anything had I not inquired about it. All he put in was one bottle and a small amount from another bottle.

I just find it weird for that amount of fluid to disappear in 3 months and no trace of it, unless the cold weather has cracked something recently and its seeping.
