Check Engine Light

Guys I was hoping someone could help me. The problem is with my 00 Impala 3.4 L v-6

My 2000 has been throwing a code (i think its like 1770 or something I know it has 1 or 2 7s in it). Basically its a bank 1 running lean code. Took it to 2 places a few months ago and they said the O2 sensor was bad. Changed it out light went off. I changed the PCV valve and noticed the rubber elbow was damaged. Well I changed that and the pcv valve grommet. Light is still coming on.

Any ideas? The light is driving me crazy

Thanks

Hhmmmmm, those dang emissions things are always tricky. I remember my Grand Am throwing all sort of codes way back when that had me replacing all sorts of things. It ended up being the 'puter. I can't remember how many sensors I replaced, but it sucked. I think I changed my Throttle Position Sensor, MAF or MAP? sensor, O2 sensor, pcv, and a coolant temperature sensor or something like that. I remember it would throw a code, I'd replace a sensor, it'd throw a different code and I'd replace another..and so on. Just warning you that if the codes keep changing, you may want to look at the 'puter. Hopefully not..

its the same code everytime. The lean bank 1

car runs and idles fine. MPG is normal too

I can't find that code number in my book however if I remember correctly the 3.4 was noted for intake manifold leaks. That could cause a lean condition.

You might also want to check that the O2 sensor that was replaced didn't loosen up...this would allow air into the exhaust right at the sensor, and the sensor would read the extra oxygen and the PCM would trip the lean code.

I was thinking what if the oil cap isnt sealing correctly? WOuld I get this code?

how many miles are on it? im really leaning torwards leaking intake or cracked exhaust manifold thats letting to much air in and by the sensor. or possibbly another bad 02 it does happen just not very often

id definetly make sure your not loosing any coolant or oil the intakes usally will leak internally if thats it . about the right milage but i think if you were to get it on a real time scanner like efi live or autotap and see if it is even switching or the new o2 is dead.

It will run lean if:

1) O2 sensor is skewed

2) MAF sensor is skewed and you're at WOT

3) vacuum leak at low RPM and throttle

4) a stuck/dirty fuel injector

5) plugged fuel filter or weak pump

what are the conditions when you get the code. Engine cold (MAF), warmed up(O2 sensor)? Heavy engine load or wide open throttle (fuel pump/filter)? At idle (vacuum)?

If it does it at idle, you can determine whether it is really lean or a false lean. If it is really lean giving it a little propane will clear it right up (idle flares before IAC brings it back down). If so, you eliminated the MAF.

there have been big problems with injectors here in SE wisconsin lately. the paper even did a survey and found that chevy's filling up at citgos were the worst combo. not sure if you get the same gas by you that we get here...
