i have a single cab long bed silverado 99' and i was wondering since i have such a small cab if i should port my woofer box that has 2 ten inch orion xtr's in it? I was told that sealed gives tighter bass but ported give louder less accurate bass, i am going for loudness but i dont have much space at all. with the way my box is now i haft to open my windows for it to even sound descent, will porting the box allow me to hear the bass with the windows closed?:confused:

That depends on weather or not the sub manufacturer recommends a sealed or ported box, and that you have the right cubic feet of volume in the box for what the manufacturer rates the sub for.

It is hard to find a box or build a box that fits in a regular cab that has the right volume for most subs. Kicker solobarics are the only ones I know of that can be properly fitted in a small sealed box and fit in a small space such as the regular cabs.

The bass will always be 10 times louder with the windows down.

I prefer sealed, cause I like a clean tight sound. Which helps in a truck.

Really?

I can't tell a difference in mine...If anything, I've always kind of thought the opposite was true.

Now I have to check.

I havent had a system in my truck since the OBS. It was a regular cab and I had two tens behind the seat in a ported box. Porting the box has to do with the speaker, not by which kind of base you want. "Free Air" speakers require a ported box. The percusion ring around the speaker is very firm and you can tell by flexing them. Sealed box speakers are very spongy and require an air tight sealed box to give them the rigidity. Are you using a cross over to filter out all of the high and midrange sounds? Are the speakers "bridged" in the box for more output? These are just things I remember from my younger loud stereo days. You never know, things may be different these days.

The speaker drives the type of box needed for the application. While there are certain things you can change on the box to tune in the frequency response of the speaker, there are not many people that have the equipment and know-how to do it. I pulled the specifications for Orion XTR's (aren't these like 10yrs old??) and they are as followed:

"From the site, the T/S parameters for the Orion 10s Extreme 10" driver are as follows: Vas: 2.55 cu.ft, Fs: 30 Hz, Qts: 0.40, and an Xmax of 7.75mm. These specs suggest that a sealed box of about 0.75 cu.ft. per driver (Qb=0.85) should work pretty well in the truck's cabin. This system should perform well with 100 Wrms, 200 Wpeak per driver."

Good luck!

Orion XTR's are nowhere near 10 years old(XTR 2 or 3 series might be). I'd say more like 6-7 years if I remember correctly. The best amp to run to those (imo) is the Orion HCCA 225(it will say competition amp/x-over on the amp, not the digital reference line) or 225R.... but not the g4 or later versions. Next question, are the subs dual or single voice coil? If they are dvc, run them at a 4-ohm mono load on the HCCA 225 and you're set. Leave the box sealed! They can get very loud sealed, and since it's single cab, you don't have much airspace for porting. These subs sound awesome in a sealed enclosure anyway. How big is your box? Run this with good 4V preout from a good headunit, and you'll be amazed...I know I was when I had the same setup. Hope this helps.
