Manual 4x4 Shifter stiff

I notice that while I am moving, I cannot use the 4x4 shifter on the floor to engage into 4x4 Hi. I know I could always use it before and now I have to come to a complete stop to engage.

 

I own a 99 Siera Ext Cab. Any thoughts?

I ve had that problem also, read your owners manuel, I think it said something like you have to be stopped or lightly increasing speed. Any way thats always worked for me now, I was trying to do it when I let of the gas but that wont work. Its also alot stiffer if its real cold like the -10s we've been getting

Mine's stiff but I just yank it into 4hi. Haven't had any problems.

Mine did that about a year and a half ago, stiff to switch into 4HI. I was told over the phone it probably was just because it was cold. Next time I went in for service an empty transfer case was found, had a small leak that dripped on to the skid plate, but never enough to leave a puddle in a parking spot. It probably isn't the case, but I would check the fluid levels to be safe.

just give it a lil gas -2 out this past weekend very light throttle cruise wouldnt budge , gave it a lil gas and fell in . its in the owners manual

I had that problem, turned out to be a worn plastic slider that the shift lever rides on. They tried to fix it with grease That didnt work, they ended up replacing the track/slider. It was under warranty so I dont know what it cost to fix. Pretty simple job I was told by dealer.
